The creator of Apple TV+ horror-comedy Widow’s Bay recently opened up about the show, drawing comparisons to another hit Apple series and revealing a major death scene that almost happened. Katie Dippold, who created the show, spoke about the connections between her series and Vince Gilligan’s sci-fi drama Pluribus. She also shared details about an original plan that would have seen a beloved character’s story end much earlier.

Widow’s Bay quickly became one of the most talked-about shows of 2026. The series follows Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), the mayor of a small New England island town. Tom wants to turn the island into a tourist destination, but the locals believe a centuries-old curse haunts the place. The show balances genuine scares with sharp comedy, a mix that has drawn in audiences worldwide.

Pluribus Comparison Highlights Apple TV’s Success

Dippold drew a comparison between Widow’s Bay and Pluribus. Both shows are big hits for Apple TV+, and both have been renewed for second seasons. The comparison makes sense as both shows represent the streaming platform’s strength in delivering high-quality genre television. Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad fame, became Apple TV’s biggest drama launch back in November 2025. It stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, a character dealing with a world-changing event.

Like Pluribus, Widow’s Bay has received strong reviews. The show was renewed for a second season even before its first season finale aired on June 17, 2026. Head of programming for Apple TV, Matt Cherniss, shared his excitement about the show’s success.

“From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laugh and cursed secret that Katie, Hiro [Murai] and the entire team have created.”

Hideo Kojima, the famous video game designer, also became a fan of the show. He binge-watched all available episodes and compared the atmosphere to Twin Peaks and Stephen King’s novels.

The Death Scene That Never Happened

The showrunner also shared a behind-the-scenes secret about a major character’s fate. During the writing process for the finale, the writers debated a dark ending for the character Ruth, played by K Callan. Ruth is the town’s elderly secretary with a deep connection to the island’s curse.

One of the original plans would have seen Tom kill Ruth by poisoning her tea, sending her into a “peaceful sleep.” This idea was part of a larger debate in the writers’ room. The team went back and forth on how to handle Tom’s moral dilemma regarding Ruth’s life.

The scene was ultimately scrapped, but not without some changes. Tom does drug Ruth’s tea in the finale, but it has a different effect. The drug acts as a truth serum, making Ruth reveal shocking secrets about her past and Tom’s family. This information completely changes Tom’s understanding of the curse.

Sheriff Bechir Clemmons later shoots Ruth during the finale’s tense moments. Bechir believes killing Ruth will end the curse and protect his unborn child. However, Tom tells Bechir that he has shot the wrong person, as the secret Ruth revealed changed everything. The bullet only grazes Ruth’s head, so she survives.

By scrapping the original death scene, the show kept Ruth alive for potential future storylines in Season 2. The character remains a key part of the island’s mysteries.

What the Finale Revealed About the Curse

The first season finale, titled “We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!,” contained many shocking twists. The most important reveal involved the true identity of the last living descendant of Richard Warren, the island’s cursed founder. Tom believed Ruth was the descendant, but Ruth confessed she had a child in secret. She gave the baby up for adoption to a married man and his wife. That baby was Lauren, Tom’s late wife.

This makes Tom’s son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), the actual last living descendant. The realization is a major blow for Tom. His mission to end the curse now means sacrificing his own child.

The finale also explained the meaning of the island’s church bells. An old video revealed that the bells toll to represent the number of lives the island demands as a sacrifice. “One soul for each bell toll,” the video states. At the end of the episode, the bells toll eight times. This means the island now requires eight more lives to satisfy its hunger and restore peace.
