  • Kumail Nanjiani
  • Christopher Mintz-Plasse

How the Bloody Cameo Scene Plays Out

Homelander (Antony Starr) and Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) visit Mr. Marathonโ€™s house searching for information about V1. The former speedster now lives in Los Angeles making movies at Sony Pictures TV. A poster in his home calls him a โ€œsupernatural speedsterโ€ using the Supernatural show font as an Easter egg for fans.

Down in the basement, the celebrities play poker. Malchemical uses his powers to drug Homelander. What follows is pure chaos. Soldier Boy breaks Malchemicalโ€™s neck first. Then Mr. Marathon, high on drugs, runs straight through every celebrity in the house at super speed. Their bodies explode on impact.

Forte, Nanjiani, and Mintz-Plasse all meet their end this way. Rogen tries to run for the exit but Soldier Boy catches him and throws him back into Mr. Marathonโ€™s path. Robinson only survives because he was in the bathroom during most of the violence, but Soldier Boy later finds him too.

Soldier Boy uses bottles of Puff Baby baby oil to slow Mr. Marathon down and breaks his legs. On the ground, Homelander wakes up and stomps on Mr. Marathon, crushing his face completely. Soldier Boy tells Homelander: โ€œI took care of it. Because f*** them, thatโ€™s why.โ€

Showrunner Explains the Celebrity Bloodbath

Eric Kripke, the showrunner of The Boys, spoke about the idea behind this scene. He said the goal was simple. โ€œGet Seth and as many of our celebrity friends in a room as possible and then kill them all in the most violent way possible,โ€ Kripke told Entertainment Weekly. He called it a โ€œcameo-palooza.โ€

Evan Goldberg, another executive producer on the show, had wanted to pull off this exact stunt for a long time. Kripke noted that when the writers sat down to plan the final season, they decided they were going to kill a bunch of celebrities. The Supernatural reunion with Padalecki and Collins gave them the perfect setup.

Phil Sgriccia, who worked on Supernatural with Kripke and the actors, returned to direct this episode. Kripke compared the experience to โ€œmeeting up with your best friends from high school.โ€

Misha Collins revealed he had to guilt-trip Kripke to get a role. โ€œI sent Eric an email at some point that said, โ€˜Hey, Eric, Just so you know, I think my son will disown me if you donโ€™t at least give me a cameo in The Boys. So if you care at all about my family unity, youโ€™ll cast me,โ€™โ€ Collins recalled. His manipulation worked.

Jensen Ackles shared that Sgriccia suggested doing one take where they played the scene as their Supernatural characters. So Soldier Boy became Dean Winchester, Mr. Marathon became Sam Winchester, and Malchemical became Castiel for one wild version that never made the final cut.
