The April 14 episode of Will Trent on ABC brought a major turning point for the series. Titled The Blank Expanse of Nothing, this episode featured the shocking death of a main character that will change everything for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation team.
The episode followed two separate storylines. Will Trent worked secretly to find his kidnapped uncle by meeting with dangerous Adelaide. Meanwhile, Faith Mitchell and Michael Ormewood investigated a teenager who claimed aliens took her, only to find something much darker.
Main Cast Members Who Led the Episode
Ramón Rodríguez played Will Trent, the special agent with the highest clearance rate at the GBI. In this episode, Will called in sick to work. He planned to meet Adelaide at a restaurant to get information about his Uncle Antonio. Will prepared a matchbox with a hidden tracker to put on Adelaide. But she saw through his plan and used restaurant workers to create a distraction. Adelaide escaped again. She then called Will to say she left him a gift around the corner. When Will went to look, he found his boss Amanda Wagner stabbed and dying on the ground.
Sonja Sohn played GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner. This episode marked the end of her character on the show. Amanda worked secretly with the FBI to track down a mysterious figure called the Commander, who connects to Adelaide and the cult group that worships serial killer James Ulster. When Amanda got a lead and started chasing it on foot, someone attacked her. Will found her body with multiple stab wounds to her chest. The showrunners confirmed to Variety that Amanda is really dead.
Iantha Richardson played Faith Mitchell. Faith spent part of this episode thinking about leaving the GBI. She watched what Will and Amanda went through and wondered if she wanted that life. But a new case pulled her back in. A teenager named Grace locked herself in a car and told Faith that aliens took her. Faith helped Grace stay calm and worked with Ormewood to find out the truth. The case got dangerous when one of the criminals attacked Faith, but she fought back and helped put the bad guys in jail.
Jake McLaughlin played Michael Ormewood. He teamed up with Faith on the alien case. Ormewood used his detective skills to piece together what really happened to Grace. The team visited a place called Shelly’s Alien Emporium, which led them to a cheap motel. There, they found out alien was code for assailants running a trafficking ring. Ormewood worked with Shelly to find the truck used to move victims and helped send Grace back home safely to her parents.
Supporting and Guest Cast in Episode 15
The episode brought back several familiar faces from the series:
Erika Christensen played APD Homicide Detective Angela Polaski. Angie appeared during the trafficking case and shared her own experience of surviving similar trauma, which helped Faith understand what Grace was going through.
Kevin Daniels played APD Homicide Detective Franklin Wilks. He has been a reliable presence on the show and was promoted to series regular this season.
Bluebell played Betty, Will’s pet chihuahua. Betty sensed something was wrong when Will prepared to meet Adelaide, and Will said goodbye to her in case things went bad.
Margaret Cho played Dr. Roach, Will’s therapist. Will met with Dr. Roach to prepare himself mentally for dealing with Adelaide. The sessions helped him keep his humanity while planning to stop her.
Mallory Jansen played Adelaide, the daughter of serial killer James Ulster. Adelaide kidnapped Will’s uncle Antonio and has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with Will all season. In this episode, she stayed one step ahead of him and ordered the attack that killed Amanda.
Constance Shulman made her first appearance on Will Trent as Shelly, the owner of Shelly’s Alien Emporium. She helped Ormewood and Faith solve the trafficking case by using an audio recording to identify the truck that moved victims.
John Ortiz played Antonio, Will’s uncle who Adelaide has been holding captive. Will prepared questions that only Antonio could answer to test if Adelaide was telling the truth, but the meeting went wrong before he got any answers.
What Happened in The Blank Expanse of Nothing
The episode had two main plots that both ended with serious consequences.
For Faith and Ormewood, what started as a strange story about alien abduction turned into a human trafficking investigation. The teenager Grace was not taken by aliens. She was a victim of criminals who used a motel as a front. The team arrested two of the people involved, but Faith knew they had not destroyed the whole ring. She felt defeated but realized the GBI needed her to keep helping victims.
For Will and Amanda, the story ended in tragedy. Amanda worked with the FBI behind Will’s back because the agents convinced her that Will would not share information if she asked. When Amanda chased a lead on foot, Adelaide had someone waiting for her. Will tried to trap Adelaide with a tracker, but she figured it out. After Adelaide escaped, she called Will to say his boss was dead. Will found Amanda on the ground with stab wounds. The showrunners confirmed this was not a fake death. Amanda Wagner is gone.
