The sexual assault case against Yoo Ah In, a famous South Korean actor, has officially been closed due to a lack of evidence. The Yongsan Police Station has confirmed that the case will not be forwarded to prosecution, ending a legal investigation that began when a 30-year-old man accused the actor of sexual assault earlier this year. This decision was made on September 11, 2024, and announced publicly on September 19.
Case Background
Yoo Ah In was accused by a 30-year-old man who claimed that the actor sexually assaulted him while he was asleep at an apartment located in the Yongsan District. The alleged incident was reported on July 15, 2024, and it led to a police investigation.
On August 29, 2024, Yoo Ah In was questioned by the police about the accusations. The actor strongly denied the allegations. The questioning lasted for approximately 90 minutes. Despite the severity of the claims, the police concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support the sexual assault allegations. As a result, the case was not forwarded to prosecution, effectively closing this chapter of legal proceedings.
No Plans for Reinvestigation
Authorities at the Yongsan Police Station clarified that they have no intention of reopening or reinvestigating the sexual assault case. The decision to close the case appears to be final at this stage, and no additional action is expected.
Legal Trouble for Drug Use
Although the sexual assault case has been dropped, Yoo Ah In has been entangled in other legal issues. On September 3, 2024, he was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 2 million KRW for repeated drug offenses. The actor was found guilty of using various illegal substances, including marijuana, propofol, midazolam, and ketamine.
Between September 2020 and March 2022, Yoo Ah In reportedly used these drugs a total of 181 times under the guise of undergoing general anesthesia for cosmetic procedures. Investigations also revealed that he had received sleeping pills under a false name between May 2021 and August 2022.
Yoo Ah In’s drug-related crimes extended beyond personal use. He was also accused of coercing his friends to use marijuana during a trip to the United States, and one of his accomplices, Mr. Choi, was sentenced to 8 months in prison with 2 years of probation.
In court, Yoo Ah In admitted to his marijuana use but denied forcing others to partake. Furthermore, it was discovered during the investigation that the actor attempted to destroy evidence and encouraged one of his accomplices, YouTuber Yang, to flee the country in an effort to avoid prosecution.
Detained After Sentencing
On the day of his sentencing, Yoo Ah In was immediately detained in the courtroom. His legal battles have significantly impacted his public image and career, with both the sexual assault case and drug-related charges casting a long shadow over his personal and professional life.
