You, Me, Us (original Italian title Noi, un po’ meglio) is a new Italian romantic comedy-drama arriving on Netflix on October 29, 2026. Directed by Daniele Luchetti, the film stars Elio Germano and Maria Chiara Giannetta as a couple whose strong love faces its toughest test when they begin the adoption process. The movie premiered at the 21st Rome Film Festival in the Grand Public section, and the official trailer arrived on October 18, 2026.

What the Film Is About

Simone is a firefighter who loves order, rules, and big family gatherings. Lucia is a nurse who values independence, dislikes conventions, and has never wanted to become a mother. Their differences have never broken them. The two have been together for four years, ever since Simone pulled Lucia out of a flipped car on the Rome coast. Their bond runs on love, physical attraction, and constant negotiation.

Everything changes when Simone asks Lucia to consider adopting a child. Lucia is sterile and has always rejected the idea of motherhood, partly because her own mother abandoned her. She agrees to try for Simone, and the couple marries in a quiet civil ceremony without telling anyone. The adoption path then pulls their deepest disagreements to the surface. Bureaucratic hurdles, meetings with social workers, and questions from psychologists force Simone and Lucia to face fears they had long avoided.

Who Is in the Cast

Elio Germano plays Simone, the methodical firefighter with a strong sense of family. Germano prepared for the role by spending time at a real fire station. He said the experience showed him a side of firefighters that is not about performance or machismo.

“Quello che ho fatto è stato frequentare un po’ la caserma dei vigili del fuoco e rendermi conto anche dei loro valori, tra cui c’è quello dell’umanità, non è un corpo performativo o machista, è un corpo che ha a che fare con l’emotività.” — Elio Germano

Maria Chiara Giannetta plays Lucia, the independent nurse who has built walls around the idea of being a mother. Giannetta described Lucia as a woman who comes from a broken family model and believes she cannot be a mother.

“Venendo da una non famiglia, da un modello di maternità assente per lei, pensa che lei non possa essere madre, però tramite il rapporto che si crea, tramite la coppia in cui si fanno dei compromessi o almeno ci si prova, c’è un tentativo di ricercare la sua maternità al di là della sterilità.” — Maria Chiara Giannetta

The supporting cast includes Anna Bonaiuto and Caterina Guzzanti as two psychologists with very different ways of evaluating adoption applications. Ilaria Spada and Filippo Nigro play another couple who look perfect on the outside but carry their own fragility. Dajana Roncione, Jacopo Olmo Antinori, and Francesca Romana De Martini also appear.

The Director and the Idea Behind the Story

Daniele Luchetti wrote the screenplay with Enrico Audenino, Davide Lantieri, and Serena Patrignanelli. The film is produced by Lucky Red for Netflix. Luchetti has said the story is not about telling people what a family should look like. It is about accepting that families can be built outside fixed models.

“Questa storia racconta come si può accettare il fatto di non essere dentro dei modelli prestabiliti per fare una famiglia, per fare dei figli e come questo adattamento continuo che sembra lo stare male nella coppia, in realtà sia la coppia stessa.” — Daniele Luchetti

The Italian title carries the film’s central idea. “Noi, un po’ meglio” means “Us, a little better.” Luchetti has described it as a story about people who are looked at with affection, shown as real but slightly better than real, so the audience can recognise themselves and still feel hope.

What Early Reviews Say

Italian critics have responded with strong notices. MyMovies called it “a romantic comedy that is funny and at times deeply moving,” praising the film for avoiding both American romantic-comedy formulas and Italian comic stereotypes. The review described it as “a unicorn in contemporary Italian cinema.” Cinefilos gave it 3.5 out of 5, noting that Luchetti uses the couple’s story to ask how far loving another person can be good for your own identity. Cinemonitor wrote that the film “reconciles you with Italian cinema” and praised the balance between drama and comedy. Libero said the movie “moves and makes you reflect without forgetting a touch of lightness.”

What to Know Before Pressing Play

The film runs as a sentimental comedy, not a heavy drama. It deals with adoption, infertility, and family pressure, but the tone stays warm and often funny. The story is told through small everyday arguments and quiet moments rather than big speeches. Viewers who enjoy character-driven Italian films about relationships will find the film easy to follow. The adoption process is shown with attention to its slow, paperwork-heavy reality, but the film keeps the focus on Simone and Lucia as people rather than on the system around them.
