Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, brings a new dark fantasy story to life with Daemons of the Shadow Realm. The anime started airing in April 2026, and viewers are already asking questions about the main twin characters, Yuru and Asa. Their relationship is not what it seems at first. The story pulls you in with a major twist about who is real and who is fake.
The series, produced by Studio BONES, follows a brother and sister separated by fate. One grew up in a peaceful mountain village. The other was taken away as a child. When their worlds crash together, old secrets come out. The village that Yuru thought was safe turns out to be built on lies.
Yuru: The Twin of Night Raised in Isolation
Yuru is the older twin brother. He is 16 years old and lives in Higashi Village, a hidden mountain community. His voice is provided by Kensho Ono in the Japanese version. Yuru grew up as a hunter, using a bow and arrow to hunt animals and fight off bandits. But those bandits were not normal criminals. They were assassins sent to capture or kill him. His father told him to hide the bodies and never tell anyone.
Yuru has a calm and careful personality. He does not trust people easily. His whole life, he believed his younger sister Asa was sick and weak, locked in a cage inside the village. He spent ten years taking care of her. He never left the village because he thought she needed him. This turned out to be a lie.
The fake Asa was actually a daemon (a supernatural being) placed by the village elders to control Yuru. The real Asa was taken away by their parents when they fled the village years ago. When the real Asa shows up with armed soldiers, Yuru’s world breaks apart.
Yuru has the power of Seal (or Fuu). This ability can “close” all things. But he has not awakened this power yet. Instead, he fights using his hunting skills. He is very good at hiding in darkness, using poison arrows, and setting traps. He does not need superpowers to be dangerous.
After the attack on his village, Yuru forms a contract with two powerful daemons named Right and Left. These two look like stone lion-dogs (komainu). They have served as guardian deities for over 400 years. Right is a large male with two horns and a loud personality. Left is a quiet but aggressive female with one horn. They are very loyal to Yuru because their previous master was cruel to them.
Yuru leaves the village with his new allies: Dera (a former mercenary), Hana (a gravedigger who handles body disposal), and the daemons Right and Left. He steps into the modern world for the first time. He has never seen a car or a city before. This fish out of water situation creates both funny and touching moments.
Asa: The Twin of Day Who Came Back From Death
Asa is the younger twin sister. She is also 16 years old. Her voice is provided by Yume Miyamoto. Asa wears a large eyepatch over her right eye. She is not hiding an injury. Her eye looks different because of her power. The sclera (white part) is black, and the pupil is white.
When Asa was a child, assassins killed her. But she did not stay dead. She went to a place between the world of the living and the dead. A daemon there gave her a choice: accept the power of Break (or Kai) and return to life, or simply die. She chose to come back. The daemon warned her that living with this power might be worse than death. People would always want to use her.
The power of Break allows Asa to sever all connections between beings. She can nullify daemon contracts. She can “unravel” things. This makes her very powerful and very dangerous. The eyepatch covers the mark of this power.
Asa currently stays with the Kagemori family. This group took her in after her parents fled the village with her. She works as a manga assistant for Hikaru Kagemori alongside her friend Gabby. Despite her cheerful moments, Asa can be cold and merciless toward enemies.
Asa loves her brother very much. She constantly wants to hug him and hear his voice. In the manga, when she is supposed to be helping with artwork, she keeps repeating “I want to see Yuru” and draws all background characters as him. But she also leads attacks on the village where he was raised. She is not purely good or evil. She is a survivor who does what she must to protect the people she cares about.
The Shocking Truth About The Fake Asa
The biggest twist in the early episodes involves the fake Asa. The girl Yuru thought was his sister for ten years was not human. The village leaders, including Granny Yamaha, created this imposter to keep Yuru trapped. They knew he would never leave if he thought his sick sister needed him.
The fake Asa clearly developed real feelings for Yuru. She protected him and cared for him. When the real Asa shows up and attacks the village, the fake Asa gets very emotional. This detail adds sadness to the whole situation. Yuru spent a decade bonding with someone who was not who he thought she was. But her feelings for him were genuine.
Granny Yamaha, who seemed like a kind village elder, was actually the mastermind behind this manipulation. The village was not a safe home. It was a cage built with lies.
Their Powers and Destinies
Yuru and Asa are called the Twins Who Sunder Day and Night. According to ancient prophecy, they are destined to wield great power. Yuru represents Night. Asa represents Day.
Their powers work as opposites. Yuru has Seal (closing). Asa has Break (opening). If they ever fight together or against each other, the results could change the world. Many groups want to control them for this reason. The Kagemori family wants to protect Asa and use her power. Other unknown factions want to capture both twins.
Yuru has not awakened his Seal power yet. He can only access it after death. This puts him in a difficult position. To use his full power, he would have to die first. Asa already died once and came back. It is unclear if Yuru would survive the same process.
Supporting Characters Who Help and Hinder
Dera (Ryu Tadera) is a former mercenary around 35 years old. He acts as a protector for Yuru. He can see daemons but does not have a contract with any. He lost his own daemon in the past when it shielded him on the battlefield. Dera is skilled with firearms and intelligence work. In private, he is a carefree gambler who loves horse racing.
Hana Danno is Dera’s partner. She is small in stature but very strong. She wears brass knuckles in fights. Her job in the village was “grave digger” meaning she disposed of bodies. She pretends to be Yuru’s stepmother to help hide him. Despite saying she dislikes children, she genuinely cares for Yuru and shows intense hostility toward adults who exploit kids.
Gabby is Asa’s close friend. She commands a jaw daemon named Gabriel covered with countless eyes. Gabby has a strict rule: never harm children. But she shows no mercy to adults who get in her way. She is small and looks young, but she insists she is older than Yuru. Gabby loves happy stories where no bad people appear.
Jin Kagemori is the youngest member of the Kagemori family. He wears glasses and a tailored suit. He serves as the family’s “cleaner” handling assassinations and body disposal. He commands two anglerfish-type daemons named Ai and Makoto. Jin is highly skilled with guns and explosives.
