The latest episode of The Forsytes brings major turning points for two marriages in the Forsyte family. Irene finally sees through Soames‘ manipulation, while Jo makes a shocking decision to leave his wife Frances after she goes too far. Episode 5, which aired on April 19, 2026, delivers emotional confrontations and sets up bigger drama for the rest of the season. Viewers in the USA and Canada can watch on PBS Masterpiece, while UK audiences get the show on BBC One and iPlayer. Australian fans find it on Foxtel and Binge, Indian viewers stream on Disney+ Hotstar, and global audiences can catch episodes on Prime Video.

Soames Uses His Father’s Health to Trap Irene in London

Soames Forsyte (Joshua Orpin) continues showing his controlling side in this episode. After tricking Irene (Millie Gibson) into coming back to London from their Paris honeymoon, he keeps lying to her face. He tells Irene that his father James (Jack Davenport) has a serious heart condition, which means they cannot return to Paris anytime soon. This breaks Irene’s heart because she fears missing her ballet auditions in Paris.

But the truth comes out. Irene discovers that James is actually “tough as an old boot” and never had any heart problem. The telegram Soames received in Paris was a complete lie. When she confronts her husband, he does not apologize. Instead, he tells her that he has given her security and a good life, and she should learn to want it. He ends their argument with a chilling warning: “It can be difficult, but the difficulty will be of your own making, not mine.”

Soames also tries to stop Irene from pursuing ballet. He dismisses her passion as just a hobby that does not suit a Forsyte wife. Even when Irene returns to her dance classes, Soames makes it clear he wants to control every part of her identity. To win her back, he buys her a pendant with her parents’ picture, but Irene is no longer fooled by his gifts.

Frances Takes Extreme Action Against Louisa

Frances Forsyte (Tuppence Middleton) faces a different kind of marriage crisis. She grows suspicious that her husband Jo (Danny Griffin) is still connected to Louisa (Eleanor Tomlinson), the mother of his children from a past relationship. When Jo learns that his twins have scarlet fever, he rushes to Louisa’s shop to help them. He promises to pay for their education and support them financially.

Frances decides to take matters into her own hands. Convinced that Louisa is manipulating Jo, she arranges to have Louisa evicted from her home. When Jo finds out what his wife did, a huge argument follows. Frances demands that Jo send Louisa away “preferably abroad” to save their marriage. But Jo refuses. He packs his bags and leaves his wife and stepdaughter June (Justine Moore) behind.

Actress Tuppence Middleton explained her character’s mindset to TV Insider:

“The thing that ties her [to the family] most strongly is slipping away from her, and she will do anything to prevent that from happening, because it means everything that she loves could be lost, and the future that she so desperately wants for her daughter could disappear. She’s worked too hard and too long for that to happen.”

Meanwhile, Louisa leaves the city with her children, unaware that Jo is on his way to help her.

June Learns the Truth About Jo and Louisa

June Forsyte plays a key role in uncovering the secrets. She first sees Jo with his twins at the market and confronts him. Jo explains that he loves his children just like he loves June, and she forgives him. Later, June visits Louisa’s shop and hints that she knows about the past relationship. During their conversation, Louisa receives an eviction notice and begs June to keep it a secret.

When June returns home, she finds her mother Frances very upset. Frances believes Louisa has trapped Jo. But June tells Jo about Louisa’s eviction, and he rushes to help them. Frances also orders their butler Wiggins to follow Jo, and Wiggins reports back that Jo keeps visiting Louisa.

James’ Business Decision Brings Disaster

The Forsyte family business faces serious trouble in Episode 5. James Forsyte earlier pushed clients to invest in a mining business, ignoring Jo‘s warnings about poor working conditions. A massive explosion at the mine kills more than 200 workers. The tragedy causes the company’s share price to drop sharply and brings outrage from the public.

Soames tries to defend his father’s decision and tells investors that the loss belongs to each individual investor, not the firm. But Jolyon Sr. (Stephen Moyer) and Jo are furious that the company ignored the risks. The family matriarch Ann (Francesca Annis) calls her sons together and reminds them that a client named Harry Falconer suffered huge losses. She insists they must do something to make up for it.

Irene Meets Philip Bosinney at the Episode’s End

After her painful confrontation with Soames, Irene leaves the house to take a walk in a nearby London park. There she finds June laughing with her fiancé, Philip Bosinney (Jamie Flatters). June insists on introducing them. This meeting is a major moment for anyone familiar with John Galsworthy‘s original The Forsyte Saga novels. In the books, Irene falls in love with Bosinney, which creates the central love triangle of the story.

Irene already feels trapped in her marriage to Soames. Now that she has met Bosinney, viewers can expect tensions to rise even more in future episodes. Soames’ obsessive love for Irene and his growing jealousy will likely push the drama to new levels.

What to Expect Next

The Forsytes continue airing Sundays at 9/8c on PBS. With Soames tightening his grip on Irene, Jo leaving Frances, and Bosinney now in the picture, the family drama shows no signs of slowing down. Episode 5 ends with Jo arranging a new house for Louisa and her children, while Frances turns to Jolyon Sr. for support after her husband walks out.
