Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak has received a major legal lifeline ahead of its theatrical release. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, refused to entertain a fresh public interest litigation (PIL) that sought to stop the film from hitting screens on November 20, 2026 . The decision removes an immediate roadblock for the Sunny Deol-starrer, which had been facing objections from sections of the medical community over its portrayal of doctors and hospitals .

The courtโ€™s refusal to hear the new plea does not end the legal scrutiny entirely. A separate, similar petition filed by doctors is already pending before a single judge bench of the same court, and that matter is scheduled for a hearing on November 16, 2026 . Until then, the filmโ€™s team can proceed with its planned release.

Why the High Court Said No to the New Plea

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma declined to take up the PIL, pointing out that the issues raised in it were already being examined in a separate writ petition before a single judge . The bench observed that allowing another petition on the same subject would lead to unnecessary duplication of legal proceedings.

โ€œWe see no reason for multiplicity of proceedings,โ€ the bench said, adding that the petitioners could join the pending matter before the single judge .

The court also allowed the petitioners to continue pursuing their representation before the concerned authorities, including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) . In simple terms, the High Court did not dismiss the concerns about the filmโ€™s content. It simply directed those concerns to be heard in the case that was already active.

The Doctors Behind the Petition

The fresh PIL was filed by Dr Nachiketa Bhatia and Dr Dhruv Chauhan . They argued that the filmโ€™s official trailer shows physical violence against medical practitioners in a way that appears heroic, and that it unfairly generalises corruption across the entire healthcare profession .

According to the petitioners, these depictions could fuel hostility towards doctors and create law-and-order problems. The plea invoked Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and asked the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC to review the film and modify or remove scenes and dialogues they found objectionable . They also sought an urgent stay on public screenings until the film completed the required statutory examination .

A separate petition filed earlier by four Delhi-based doctors is the one currently pending before the single judge. That plea was filed by Dr Nishant Soni, Dr Ashish Tomar, Dr Ravi Bhatia, and Dr Shivam Vatsal, all associated with different corporate hospitals, along with office bearers of D.O.C.S (Doctors of Corporate Society) . On November 2, 2026, the single judge issued notices to the Centre, the CBFC, and the filmโ€™s producers, asking them to respond to the allegations .

What the CBFC Told the Court

During the Wednesday hearing, the counsel representing the CBFC shared a key detail: Suryaa has not yet been certified by the board. The certification process is still under consideration . This means the film has not been formally examined by the censor board for its theatrical release at the time of the High Courtโ€™s decision.

The CBFCโ€™s lawyer also noted that the Hindi film is not an original work but a remake of a South Indian movie that is already in the public domain . This point was raised in the context of the objections, suggesting that the story had already been told and released in another language.

A Story Rooted in Family and Medical Corruption

Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak is the official Hindi adaptation of the 2018 Malayalam crime thriller Joseph, written by Shahi Kabir . The film is directed by M. Padmakumar, the same filmmaker who helmed the original Malayalam version, and it marks his Bollywood directorial debut .

Sunny Deol plays a retired police officer whose life is shattered by a personal tragedy involving his daughter. The grieving father is pulled back into the world of investigation, and his search for answers leads him towards a larger criminal network involving medical malpractice and illegal organ trafficking . The narrative is said to span three different phases of the protagonistโ€™s life, moving between his past and his present .

The filmโ€™s title translates to โ€œFrom the End to the Beginning,โ€ and the tagline reads: โ€œTorn between Past and Present, He uncovers the TRUTHโ€ . The story is described as inspired by true events and promises to show the โ€œshocking truthโ€ of the medical system .

A Familiar Story With a New Treatment

Director M. Padmakumar has been clear that the Hindi version is not a scene-by-scene copy of the Malayalam original. In an interview, he explained that the approach changed when the project moved to Hindi.

โ€œSuryaa is not a carbon copy of Joseph. Even though it is a remake, the Hindi version is being crafted in a manner that is distinctly different from the Malayalam original,โ€ Padmakumar said .

He added that Sunny Deol wanted a fresh film rather than a direct repeat. โ€œWhen we moved to the Hindi version, the filmโ€™s producer and lead actor, Sunny Deol, told me to forget about the Malayalam film Joseph. They wanted a fresh product,โ€ the director recalled . While the central story and characters remain the same, the setting, characterisation, and narrative pace have been adapted for Hindi-speaking audiences .

The original Joseph, released in November 2018, became a turning point in actor Joju Georgeโ€™s career and was a commercial success, reportedly earning around Rs 28 crore against a budget of roughly Rs 3 crore .

The Cast Around Sunny Deol

Ravi Kishan and Pragya Jaiswal play key roles in the film . The supporting cast includes Jisshu Sengupta, Tinu Anand, Manish Wadhwa, Tanushree Chakraborty, Rohit Tiwari, and Anoop Trivedi, among others . The film is produced by Deepak Mukut, Hemmant Mukut, and Lokesh Mukut under the MM Moviez banner, with Kamal Mukut presenting it .

Producer Kamal Mukut has spoken about the filmโ€™s scale and his history with Sunny Deol. โ€œI signed Sunny Deol for two films โ€” Gadar 2 and SURYAA. We began with Gadar 2, and it became history. Motivated by its success, and drawing upon my experience of more than five decades in the industry, I created SURYAA โ€” a story of a common man that will surely touch every life,โ€ he said . He described the film as taking the audience through a โ€œnever-before-seen avatarโ€ of Sunny Deol, woven across three phases of his life journey .

How the Filmโ€™s Promotions Rolled Out

The first-look motion poster was shared on October 12, 2026, showing Sunny Deol with a beard, a weathered face, and an intense gaze . The teaser arrived on October 19, 2026, which was the actorโ€™s 69th birthday . The first song, โ€œSuniyo Zara,โ€ also drew attention for bringing singers Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu together again after 21 years .

The teaser received a strong response on social media, with viewers calling it intense and gripping while praising Sunny Deolโ€™s performance and the serious storyline . Some users also shared personal experiences about healthcare costs, with one viewer writing about losing a friend after treatment costs reached โ‚น5 lakh in three days .

The Medical Bodyโ€™s Objection

Before the court battle, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had already raised concerns. IMA Maharashtra wrote to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on October 22, 2026, seeking an urgent review of the filmโ€™s promotional videos and trailer . The national bodyโ€™s president, Dr Anilkumar J Nayak, sought an โ€œimpartial reviewโ€ and corrective measures from the filmmakers .

The IMAโ€™s core objection was that the promotional material appeared to justify physical assaults on doctors, nurses, and hospital staff as heroic, and that it generalised corruption across the entire profession rather than showing it as individual wrongdoing . The association stated that it does not defend corruption or professional misconduct, but objected to the broad portrayal of the healthcare system as corrupt and the normalisation of violence as a response.
