The April 30 episode of 9-1-1 (9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 17) delivered two huge shockers that left fans talking. Oliver Starkโs character Buck discovered he has a four-year-old biological son named Theo, while Angela Bassettโs Athena Grant got shot by her own partner in the final minutes.

The episode, titled โI Got You Babe,โ aired on ABC at 8:00 PM ET/PT. It is now streaming on Hulu for those who missed the live broadcast.
A Rescue Call Changes Buckโs Life Forever
The 118 team responded to a daycare emergency. A wild four-year-old boy named Theo had climbed onto a power plant while chasing a red balloon. Buck managed to connect with the child by calling himself โMr. Poop,โ which got Theo to trust him and come down safely.
Theo refused to listen to his daycare workers and wanted to stay with Buck. The team brought the boy to the firehouse and called his parents. Connor and Kameron showed up to pick up their son. These are the same friends Buck helped get pregnant back in Season 6 by donating his sperm.
Oliver Starkโs character never expected to see the child again. He had asked for no contact to avoid getting attached. But Theoโs parents noticed how similar their son acted to Buck. The child had already destroyed Buckโs apartment, broken vases, spilled chocolate milk everywhere, and nearly started a fire.
Theoโs parents jokingly blamed Buck for their sonโs wild behavior. They laughed about it over lunch and invited Buck to spend more time with Theo. The happy moment did not last long.

Tragedy Hits Minutes Later
Buck got called to a car accident. A couple reported that a boat was charging toward their vehicle on the road. When the team arrived, Buck realized the victims were Connor and Kameron. Theo sat trapped in the backseat.
Chimney and the squad rescued Theo first. The little boy walked away without a scratch. But doctors pronounced Connor and Kameron dead at the hospital. Theo did not understand what happened. When Buck asked if he could visit him, the boy replied, โOnly if my father allows.โ
Theo went into emergency foster care. The episode set up a major parenting storyline for Buck, who now faces the choice of adopting his biological son after his friendsโ sudden death.

Athenaโs Investigation Turns Deadly
While Buck dealt with his personal crisis, Angela Bassettโs Athena Grant worked on a human trafficking case. Detective Hooks, played by Josh Stamberg, seemed involved with a Russian trafficker named Nikolay Castor. Athena grew suspicious of her partner throughout the episode.
Hooks invited Athena to join a raid on Castorโs mansion. He claimed he wanted to clear her doubts about his loyalty. But everything went wrong once they entered the building. Hooks acted unprofessional and seemed intent on messing up the mission.
The situation exploded when Hooks shot an unarmed man. He claimed the victim held a cell phone that looked like a gun. Athena found the phone on the ground and picked it up to examine it. When she turned to confront Hooks, he shot her at close range.
Blood flew through the air as Athena fell to the ground. The episode ended with her eyes slowly opening, but Hooks stood over her, ready to finish the job. The screen cut to black before viewers learned if she survived.

The Season 9 finale airs Thursday, May 7 at 8:00 PM ET on ABC. The preview shows Eddie and Hen rushing Athena to the hospital. Harry cries when he sees his mother. Then an active shooter locks down the building.
Eddie appears covered in blood and clutching his side in the teaser. A heart monitor flatlines, but it is unclear if Athena or Eddie faces death. The show got renewed for Season 10 by ABC, so fans expect answers soon.
The trailer also hints that Buck will likely adopt Theo. Showrunner Tim Minear told Decider he started a story at the end of this season that carries over into next season. That story probably involves Buck becoming a father.
