The Agency: Central Intelligence is finally returning for its highly anticipated second season. The first season of the spy thriller, starring Michael Fassbender, ended with a massive cliffhanger that left fans desperate for answers. Season 2 is set to premiere on Paramount+ on June 21, 2026, nearly a year and a half after the first season’s finale on January 26, 2025.
As we gear up for the new chapter, here is a complete recap of everything that happened in Season 1. The show follows CIA officer “Martian,” who is forced to abandon a deep undercover life in Ethiopia and return to London. The season builds on his emotional ties and the deadly game of international espionage that ensues.
Martian’s Return and Forbidden Love
Season 1 opens with the return of skilled CIA officer Brandon Colby, codename “Martian,” to London Station after a six-year undercover assignment in Africa. He is a legend in the agency, a master of deep cover, but he left behind a life and a love in Ethiopia.
Upon his return, Martian reconnects with his ex-lover, a married Sudanese anthropologist named Dr. Samia Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith). Despite the dangers, he breaks strict CIA protocol and revives his old undercover alias, Paul Lewis, to be with her. His deep emotional connection to Samia becomes his greatest vulnerability. Rival agencies, including the Chinese MSS and MI6, quickly identify this weakness and begin to exploit her to recruit him and spy on America.
The Rescue of Coyote in Belarus
While Martian deals with his personal turmoil, the London Station faces a crisis in Belarus. Coyote (Alex Reznik), a deep-cover CIA asset and an alcoholic, is captured by a Russian mercenary group. He is drugged by a corrupt psychiatrist, framed in a staged DUI, and sold to the Valhalla mercenaries.
The team is under immense pressure from Langley to bring him home. This leads to a risky rescue mission named Operation Felix, which puts the lives of the entire station at risk. The operation sees the CIA extract valuable assets and escape through occupied Ukraine, resulting in a heavy firefight.
The Gremlin’s Mission in Iran
A parallel plot follows a rookie agent, Danny (Saura Lightfoot-Leon), codenamed “Gremlin.” She is prepared for a high-stakes undercover mission to get close to an Iranian nuclear scientist, Professor Reza Mortazavi, in London. Her handler, Naomi (Katherine Waterston), pushes her into a deep-cover assignment that will eventually allow her to enter Iran and identify figures tied to the nuclear program. By the end of the season, Danny reaches Tehran, keeps her cover secure, and proves she is ready for undercover duty.
A Web of Political Tension
The season also involves uncovering high-level global conspiracies. Martian uncovers secret talks between Sudan, China, Europe, and Saudi Arabia that threaten to escalate global conflict. This discovery raises the stakes for the CIA and deepens the complex political landscape of the show.
Meanwhile, Samia is placed under immense pressure by a Sudanese intelligence operative named Osman, who watches her every move.
The Shocking Season Finale
The finale sets up the central conflict for Season 2. The CIA successfully rescues Coyote from Ukraine. However, Martian’s life takes a dark turn. He survives a motorcycle crash that was no accident. In the hospital, MI6 officer James Richardson reveals he orchestrated the crash and offers Martian a deal.
Richardson holds Samia, who is imprisoned and facing torture, as leverage. He forces Martian to work as a double agent for MI6 while staying inside the CIA. In return, Samia’s safety would be guaranteed. Martian has no choice but to accept.
This choice leaves him trapped in a dangerous double life, torn between his duty to his country and the woman he loves.
