The Dance of the Dragons keeps getting more complicated. House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 aired on July 12, 2026, and it brought a major shift in the power struggle. The Hightower lord himself has taken over the castle of Lord and Lady Footly, the noble family who previously controlled the town.
Ormund Hightower makes an unforgettable first impression in this episode. He is shown relaxing in a bath in the middle of Lord Footly’s living room, working on his war plans from the tub. When Lady Footly complains about him taking over their home, Ormund reminds her that she once bent the knee to Rhaenyra Targaryen. He tells her that treason comes with a price and makes it clear that the Footlys no longer have any say in what happens in their own castle.
This scene shows exactly what kind of leader Ormund is. He is confident, arrogant, and completely unbothered by the discomfort of others. He uses his position to humiliate the people he has conquered while pretending to be a reasonable ruler.
The Real Daeron Targaryen Finally Revealed
One of the biggest moments in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 is the confirmation of the real Daeron Targaryen’s identity. Fans had been speculating about this since the season premiere, and the episode finally gave them the answer.
The young squire who has been standing by Ormund’s side since the beginning of the season is actually Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Daeron, and the character has a major difference from his siblings. Unlike Aegon and Aemond, who have the classic Targaryen blond hair, Daeron has the dark auburn hair of his mother Alicent.
Alicent sent Daeron away to Oldtown when he was just a baby because she did not want him to grow up like his brothers. Ormund Hightower raised him as his ward, and the episode shows that Daeron has learned to follow Ormund’s orders without question. This backstory explains why Daeron is so different from Aegon and Aemond, but it also raises concerns about what kind of man he is becoming under Ormund’s influence.

Rhaenyra cannot simply fly to Tumbleton on her dragon and burn the town. The town is loyal to her, and if she attacks it with dragonfire, she would be killing her own supporters. Ormund knows this, and he is using the townspeople as shields to protect himself. Grand Maester Orwyle suggests sending the riverlord army to take back Tumbleton instead of using dragons. This would cost fewer lives and would not damage Rhaenyra’s reputation among the common people.
Rhaenyra also has to deal with money problems. The royal treasury is empty, so she names Ser Torrhen Manderly as her new Master of Coin. This is a strategic move because people will blame Manderly when the money runs out, not Rhaenyra.
Corlys Velaryon and the Triarchy Threat
Lord Corlys Velaryon makes a surprising decision in this episode. Instead of serving as Rhaenyra’s Hand, he chooses to confront the Triarchy forces in battle. Corlys is still angry with Rhaenyra because she has not legitimized his sons despite his request.
Corlys sends his elder illegitimate son Alyn of Hull to speak on his behalf. Surprisingly, Alyn gets along well with Rhaenyra, which could help repair the relationship between the queen and House Velaryon in the future.
Daemon Finally Learns the Truth About Sheepstealer’s Rider
Daemon Targaryen returns to the Vale in this episode, and he finally learns something he has been trying to figure out for weeks. His dragon Caraxes flies to a cave against Daemon’s instructions, and there he finds the rider of the dragon Sheepstealer.
The rider is none other than Rhaena Targaryen, Daemon’s own daughter. Daemon tries to convince Rhaena to fly to King’s Landing and tell Rhaenyra the truth. But Rhaena has her own ideas and reminds her father that her brother Jace died in the season premiere.
This discovery could have major consequences for the war. Rhaena now has a dragon of her own, which gives Team Black another powerful weapon. But her relationship with her father and her feelings about her brother’s death might make her choices unpredictable.
Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower Arrive at Harrenhal
Ser Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower arrive at Harrenhal in this episode, only to find the castle completely empty. All the Strongs are dead, and the only person there to greet them is Alys Rivers, who seems to be enjoying herself far too much.
Alys tells them that Aemond stopped by but left after Rhaenyra took King’s Landing. She has also managed to hide Aemond and the dragon Vhagar, which is no small feat considering Vhagar is the largest dragon in the world.
The fact that Aemond is missing is a serious problem for Ormund. He is counting on Aemond and Vhagar to help him keep control of Tumbleton. Without them, his position in the town is much weaker than he wants everyone to believe.
Fan Reactions to Ormund Hightower’s Brutal Justice
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 includes a scene that has fans talking. A Hightower soldier tries to assault Kat, the wife of Hugh Hammer. Kat’s brother Leo stops the soldier and defends her.
When the matter is brought before Ormund, he publicly announces that the soldier will be gelded for his crime. But then Ormund does something much darker. He privately orders Daeron to execute Leo for defending his sister. Daeron is clearly traumatized by this order, but his years of obedience to Ormund make him follow through.
Fans have been reacting strongly to this scene. One person posted on X: “Ormund was literally one second away from becoming dragon food. Tessarion took that personally”. Another fan wrote: “Ormund: ‘Don’t love Tessarion too much.’ Tessarion: ‘Don’t breathe too confidently’”.
The scene where Daeron hugs his dragon Tessarion and says they will fly again soon also caught fans’ attention. Ormund warns Daeron not to show affection for the dragon, but Tessarion clearly does not like Ormund and nearly attacks him.

He has his own agenda, and he is willing to use anyone, including his own ward Daeron, to achieve his goals. He is also not afraid to get his hands dirty, as shown by his brutal treatment of the Footlys and his manipulation of Daeron.
The show has also given Ormund some darkly funny moments. His obsession with cleanliness and his hatred of bad smells make him stand out in a world where most characters do not seem to care about hygiene. One review describes his “crash out” as “House of the Dragon comedy at its finest”.
