Nicole Kidman is speaking openly about her two high-profile divorces for the first time since her split from Keith Urban. The 59-year-old Oscar-winning actress sat down with British Vogue for a candid interview where she talked about the end of her 19-year marriage to Urban and looked back at her divorce from Tom Cruise more than two decades ago.

Kidman filed for divorce from country music star Keith Urban in September 2025. The separation was finalized out of court by January 2026. The former couple cited irreconcilable differences in their divorce filing. They share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15.

The Practical Magic actress admitted that going through one public divorce did not make the second one any easier to handle. When asked if her split from Cruise helped prepare her for the divorce from Urban, Kidman made it clear that each breakup brings its own challenges.

“It’s all new. Every time!”

Nicole Kidman Says She Was Willing to ‘Throw Career Away’ for Tom Cruise

Kidman also reflected on her marriage to Tom Cruise, which lasted from 1990 to 2001. She was just 23 years old when she married the Top Gun star, who was 28 at the time. The couple met on the set of Days of Thunder in 1990 and got married on Christmas Eve that same year.

The actress shared that people warned her about marrying Cruise. They told her it would negatively affect her acting career. But Kidman said she did not care about the warnings because she was in love.

“I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.’”

She recalled how people later told her, “See, we told you,” after she became known as Cruise’s wife. Kidman responded by saying she did not regret her choice.

“So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.”

Kidman said marrying Cruise at such a young age put her in the public spotlight very early in her life. She noted that she has spent more of her life as a famous person than not.

“Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple.”

Despite the warnings, Kidman went on to build a successful career. She has received five Academy Award nominations and won Best Actress for The Hours.

Actress Felt ‘Fearful and Deeply Vulnerable’ After Keith Urban Split

Kidman opened up about the emotional toll of her divorce from Urban. She admitted that the end of her marriage left her feeling scared and exposed.

“There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing.”

The actress said she had a different vision for how her life would turn out. She did not expect to be in this position after nearly two decades of marriage.

“I didn’t expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.”

Kidman described the process of adjusting to her new reality.

“You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not. You have to adjust. You adapt.”

She said her future feels completely uncertain at this point in her life.

“The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now.”

The Australian actress said she had two choices when facing her fear. She could either avoid confronting it or move forward with hope.

“I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.”

Kidman Lives by ‘Feelings First’ Philosophy

Kidman described herself as someone who leads with her heart rather than her head.

“I’ve approached my whole life like that. That’s just who I am. I don’t overthink things and I’m probably not that analytical.”

She said people often expect her to be more measured in her decisions, but that is not who she is.

“I lead with my heart. I just go, ‘OK, what do I feel here? I’ll give it a go.’”

Kidman explained that she still approaches things intellectually at times, but she does not want her head to rule her life.

“I’ve always wanted to live a well-examined life, so what does that entail? Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities.”

Actress Credits Mentors for Helping Her Through Difficult Time

Kidman said she has relied on older women in her life for guidance during this challenging period. She mentioned her mother and another mentor who helped her navigate the transition.

“Part of the way they approach life was sometimes to say to me: ‘Nicole, you just got to take it on the chin.’”

She said accepting that life is not always fair has helped her move forward.

“Once you accept that, instead of going, ‘Well that’s not fair or it’s unjust,’ you go, ‘Well, yes, actually it isn’t fair. Because things are not fair.’”

Kidman also shared that she finds comfort in knowing who she is as a person.

“I know my character. I know my talent. I know who I am. If I make a mistake and it doesn’t connect, or something goes wrong in my life where it’s humiliating, it’s OK.”

The actress has two daughters with Urban. Court documents show Kidman was named the primary residential parent. The former couple agreed to make major decisions about their children together. Neither party sought spousal support.

Kidman Finds Joy in Dancing and Embracing Life

Despite the difficult year, Kidman said she has been trying to enjoy life. She revealed that she sometimes goes dancing in disguise.

“I’ll put on glasses. Sometimes I’ll wear a wig to hide, a little dark wig, and then I can just dance.”

She said she feels safe when she is surrounded by people she knows.

“As long as I’m surrounded by people – like, I take people with me – then I’m fine. I need it.”

The actress has been spending time in Ibiza and enjoying what she calls a “Euro summer”. She has been partying and embracing love following her split from Urban.

Kidman and Urban were married for 19 years before calling it quits. The couple got together in 2005 after Kidman’s divorce from Cruise. They married in 2006 and welcomed Sunday Rose in 2008. Their daughter Faith Margaret arrived in 2010 via surrogate.

Kidman also adopted two children with Cruise during their marriage. Daughter Isabella is now 33, and son Connor is 31.

The actress continues to work on new projects. She is set to appear in Practical Magic 2. Her career remains active even as she navigates major changes in her personal life.
