Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently got emotional while talking about his relationship with girlfriend Shubhra Shetty. The director, known for movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, spoke openly about their 20-year age gap, the criticism they faced, and whether marriage is in their future. The couple gave a joint interview to journalist Janice Sequeira, where they shared personal details about their nearly decade-long relationship.
Shubhra Shetty Doesn’t Believe in Marriage
When asked about wedding plans, Anurag Kashyap made it clear that marriage is not something Shubhra Shetty wants. He told the interviewer that Shubhra does not believe in the institution of marriage. The 53-year-old director said he is very happy with her and wants to stay with her no matter what.
“I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes. There’s a lot in life. What is an old man’s insecurity? I want to be healthy enough to outlive the people I love.”
Anurag Kashyap further explained that as long as they have found what they have now, he is happy with anything and does not want to lose this relationship. This was his first time speaking publicly about marriage plans with Shubhra Shetty, even though they have been together for about 11 years.
The Emotional Moment That Changed Everything
During the interview, Shubhra Shetty recalled a touching moment from their early days together. She said they were in their honeymoon phase and deeply in love when she casually mentioned that being in love was on her bucket list. She told Anurag Kashyap that she could happily die after experiencing it.
But the filmmaker got very serious and teared up. He told her that before meeting her, he was never afraid of dying. He did not care if he got into a car accident. But after falling in love with her, he found something worth living for and actually did not want to die.
“Before this, I was never scared if I got into a car accident. I just didn’t care about anything. I feel like, for the first time in my life, I’ve found something worth living for, so I actually don’t want to die.”
Shubhra Shetty called it the sweetest way to look at their relationship. Anurag Kashyap became emotional again as she recounted this memory during the interview.
Age-Shaming and Self-Consciousness
The couple also spoke honestly about the age difference between them. Anurag Kashyap is 53 years old, while Shubhra Shetty is in her 30s. This makes their age gap around 20 years.
Anurag Kashyap admitted that they have faced age-shaming over the years, though he feels things have changed with time. He said they have had their share of troubles and moments of self-consciousness.
“We’ve had our share of troubles. We’ve had our moments. We have been self-conscious.”
Shubhra Shetty quickly corrected him, saying he has been more conscious than her. Anurag Kashyap agreed and opened up about a difficult phase in their relationship.
“I’ve been more conscious. I was more conscious. And not just more conscious, at one point, I became so conscious, I was trying so hard to push it away.”
He explained that the reason for his self-consciousness was that Shubhra Shetty does not look her age. She still looks the same, and as he grew older while she kept looking young, he became aware of their age gap.
“Her face doesn’t show her age. She still looks the same. She doesn’t look her age. So the thing is, the more I grew older and she kept looking the same, that’s when I became slightly conscious.”
How They First Met
Shubhra Shetty previously worked as an assistant director at Anurag Kashyap‘s production company, Phantom Films. The couple was first photographed together in 2015. However, it was only in a 2018 interview that Anurag Kashyap first admitted to being in a relationship with her.
The couple now lives in Bengaluru after the filmmaker left Mumbai. They have kept their relationship mostly away from the public eye over the years.
Shubhra’s Parents and Their Reaction
Shubhra Shetty also spoke about how her parents reacted to her relationship with Anurag Kashyap. She said her mother now thinks he is like a henpecked husband. But initially, her parents had concerns.
“If I were a parent and my 20-year old daughter was dating a 40-year something man who is twice married, has a kid, rumoured to be a lot of other things, how would you react? I think my parents did a pretty good job.”
Anurag Kashyap added with humour that Shubhra Shetty‘s mother is only seven or eight years older than him, but she is also a very good friend of his.
Anurag Kashyap’s Previous Marriages
Before his relationship with Shubhra Shetty, Anurag Kashyap was married to editor Aarti Bajaj. They ended their six-year marriage in 2009 and share a daughter named Aaliyah Kashyap. He later began dating actor Kalki Koechlin, whom he married in 2011. They ended their marriage after four years.

Shubhra Shetty revealed how their love story began. She said Anurag Kashyap jumped in and told her he was in love with her, and she was surprised. He told her he did not expect anything from her because she had to go through life, but he had already gone through life and knew what he was saying when he said he loved her.
“You take your time, see the world and come back.”
He then started crying and asked her if she was sure she was ready for him and would not leave him. Shubhra Shetty said they cry all the time, and that is one of the things that made them bond.
Anurag Kashyap said their bond was built on books, movies, and festivals. Shubhra Shetty added that because he had seen life and she had not, he was adamant that she go out and experience the world, and if she had to find her way back to him, she would.
