Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks is in negotiations to star in and produce a film adaptation of Allen Levi’s breakout novel Theo of Golden for Warner Bros. Pictures. The studio is currently closing a deal for the feature film rights to the book, which has sold over 3.5 million copies in the United States and become a global publishing phenomenon. The project has been described as a word-of-mouth success story, following a similar path to beloved adaptations like The Bridges of Madison County.

The Novel’s Journey to the Big Screen

Theo of Golden started with a modest beginning. Author Allen Levi self-published the book in 2023 with little promotion. Levi, a former lawyer who turned to making music on an island in Georgia, did not expect his debut novel to become a massive hit. The book slowly gained readers through word of mouth, helped by the efforts of his niece Aron Ritchie.

The novel’s popularity grew when major publications like The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times wrote about Levi’s unlikely success story. A major turning point came when Oprah Winfrey featured the author and his book on her podcast. After that, sales increased dramatically. Simon & Schuster picked up the book for wider distribution through its Atria Books imprint in October 2025.

The book has sold more than 3.5 million copies in the US and has been translated into 43 languages. It reached number one on bestseller lists in countries including the Netherlands, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

What the Book Is About

The story takes place in the made-up town of Golden. A stranger named Theo arrives one spring morning without explaining where he came from or why he is there. He visits a local coffee shop where pencil portraits of local people hang on the walls. Theo buys the portraits one at a time and returns each drawing to the person it shows.

In exchange for giving back the portraits, Theo asks each person for their story. Through these meetings, secrets are shared, regrets are revealed, and ordinary lives change in meaningful ways. The encounters help Theo deal with a painful tragedy from his own past. The book focuses on themes of kindness, human connection, and the power of being truly seen by others.

Tom Hanks to Star and Produce

Tom Hanks, who is 70 years old, is in talks to play the title character Theo. He will also serve as a producer on the movie through his production company Playtone, alongside his partner Gary Goetzman. Gil Netter, known for producing film adaptations like The Blind Side, Marley & Me, and Life of Pi, will also produce. Author Allen Levi will be an executive producer.

Warner Bros. executives Jesse Ehrman and Sheila Walcott are overseeing the project. The studio’s literary affairs executive Ian Dalrymple is credited with bringing the project to Warner Bros.’ attention.

Hanks has a long history of starring in film adaptations of popular books. His previous work includes Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Catch Me If You Can, The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and News of the World. He recently finished work on Greyhound 2, which he wrote and starred in. He and Goetzman are also preparing The Comebacker, a film directed by Marielle Heller where Hanks plays a pitching coach for the New York Mets.

What This Means for the Film

The movie adaptation is still in early stages. Warner Bros. is finalizing the paperwork for the film rights, and Hanks is in talks to star. No director or screenwriter has been announced yet. There is no release date set for the film.

The project follows a pattern of successful book-to-film adaptations that appeal to older audiences. The novel’s emotional story and focus on human relationships make it a good fit for the big screen. Given Hanks’ experience with similar roles and his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, the film is already generating significant interest.

The book’s journey from a self-published novel to a major studio film with a two-time Oscar winner attached is remarkable. Levi, who is nearing 70 himself, has seen his debut novel become a global sensation. The film adaptation will bring his story to an even wider audience.
