Wil Wheaton has made his position clear on the upcoming Harry Potter television series. The actor, known for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory, publicly stated he will not be watching the new HBO show. His reason: standing in solidarity with the transgender community amid ongoing controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling’s views.
The 54-year-old actor, who has over one million followers on Threads, responded to a question from a user who asked, “Are we watching the new Harry Potter series?”. Wheaton’s reply was direct and left no room for interpretation.
“As so many have said, f*ck no we aren’t, we are standing with trans people.”
The response quickly gained attention online and sparked a debate among fans. Not everyone agreed with Wheaton’s stance. Another user fired back with a contrasting view, writing, “For me it’s a big Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!”. This exchange highlights the deep division among the Harry Potter fanbase as the series prepares for its debut.
The Ongoing Controversy Surrounding J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling, who is now 61 years old, has faced significant criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates over her comments about transgender people. The author has repeatedly expressed views that many consider anti-trans, including her belief that biological sex cannot be changed. HBO and Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has addressed the controversy surrounding Rowling’s views. When asked in April 2023 whether attracting talent to the series would be a challenge given Rowling’s comments, Bloys shut down the question.
“I don’t have a comment on that today. No, I don’t think this is the forum to discuss that. That’s a very online conversation, obviously very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into.”
Bloys made it clear that Warner Bros.’ priority was elsewhere. “Our priority is what’s on the screen. Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority — what’s on screen,” he said.
Regarding Rowling’s involvement, Bloys confirmed she would be closely connected to the project. “She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that,” he added.
Bloys has also stated that Rowling’s anti-trans statements have not affected the casting or hiring of writers or production staff for the show. He emphasized that the series would not be “infused” with Rowling’s controversial views on the transgender community.
Directors Turn Down Harry Potter Series Over Rowling’s Views
The controversy has also affected the production team. Two prominent television directors have publicly declined opportunities to work on the Harry Potter series due to Rowling’s stance on transgender issues.
Ally Pankiw, known for her work on Black Mirror, and Kate Herron, director of Marvel’s Loki and Netflix’s Sex Education, both revealed on social media that they rejected offers to direct episodes of the HBO series.
Pankiw’s response was particularly strong. “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” she wrote. Herron shared a similar sentiment, making it clear that their decision was based on principle.
Both directors are queer women, and their decisions have been widely discussed within the entertainment industry.
Harry Potter Series Cast Members Speak Out
Several cast members of the upcoming Harry Potter series have also distanced themselves from Rowling’s views.
Bel Powley, who will play Petunia Dursley in the series, told The Telegraph that she strongly disagrees with Rowling’s position on gender issues.
“I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender. I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance. But I love Harry Potter.”
John Lithgow, who is set to play Albus Dumbledore, has taken a more nuanced position. The 80-year-old actor has described Rowling’s comments as “ironic and inexplicable” but also suggested that much of what she has said has been “twisted and misrepresented”.
Lithgow revealed that people insisted he walk away from the job, but he chose not to. “I take the subject extremely seriously,” he said when asked about Rowling’s trans statements.
Mixed Reactions From Original Harry Potter Cast
The original Harry Potter film cast has also been divided on the issue. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have previously spoken out against Rowling’s views.
However, some older actors from the franchise have taken a different position. Jim Broadbent, who played Professor Slughorn, told The Telegraph that the backlash against Rowling was “really sad”.
“I think JK Rowling is amazing. I haven’t had to confront it myself, but I would support her in that, I think, if it came to it.”
Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes have also defended Rowling publicly. Bonham Carter called the backlash “horrendous” in a 2022 interview with The Times, adding, “She’s not meaning it aggressively; she’s just saying something out of her own experience”. Fiennes told The New York Times that the verbal abuse directed at Rowling is “disgusting” and “appalling”.
Harry Potter Series Release Date and Cast
The HBO series is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026 (Christmas Day), with the first season titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The first season will consist of eight episodes. The cast includes:
