VisionQuest star Lauren Morais has spoken about where her character’s story could go after the Disney+ series. Morais plays Lisa Molinari, a skilled pickpocket who becomes the Marvel Comics character Coat of Arms. In a new interview, she said she wants to see Lisa struggle with the line between hero and villain, and what that struggle would do to her bond with Tommy Maximoff.

The Quote That Started the Conversation

Morais spoke with Polygon about her character’s future. The interviewer asked if she would like to see Lisa’s shifting morality from the comics play out on screen. Morais gave a clear answer.

“I would definitely love to see her wrestle with villainy and superheroism, and what happens to her relationship to Tommy as she does that, because she’s been through so much with Tommy in VisionQuest. It’d be interesting to see how she gets to that point and why she starts questioning what it all means. I think the Young Masters route is a really cool route as well. That would be sick.”

The Young Masters are a team of young villains from Marvel Comics. They were created as a darker mirror of the Young Avengers. Lisa is a member of that team in the comics, using the name Coat of Arms.

Who Is Coat of Arms in the Comics?

Lisa Molinari first appeared in Dark Reign: Young Avengers #1 in 2009. The character was created by writer Paul Cornell and artist Mark Brooks. In the comics, Lisa meets Tommy Shepherd while they are both held in juvenile detention. Tommy later becomes the speedster hero Speed.

After leaving detention, Lisa struggles to adjust to normal life. She is a talented visual artist, but she has trouble holding down regular work. One day, she finds a mysterious coat hanging on a rack in an alleyway. The coat is called Tiboro’s Coat, and it is tied to an extra-dimensional sorcerer named Tiboro. The coat gives Lisa the power to fly and to grow four extra arms, giving her six limbs in total. She takes the name Coat of Arms and joins the Young Masters.

The MCU Changed Her Origin Story

VisionQuest did not use the magical coat from the comics. The show took a science-fiction route instead. In Episode 6, Lisa is infected with nanobots created by Jocasta, the AI villain played by T’Nia Miller. The nanobots burn through her will and force her to attack Vision and Tommy. Vision is able to fry the nanite in her brain, but the fix is only temporary.

The show has already shown Lisa with two extra robotic arms coming out of a high-tech backpack in trailers. This is the MCU’s version of Coat of Arms. The arms are mechanical, not magical. Episode 7, titled “Immolation,” showed a mind-controlled Lisa summoning two artificial arms while wearing a black oversized coat. The coat is a nod to Tiboro’s Coat from the comics.

Morais said the robotic arms were a fun challenge to film. She trained with the fight team at Pinewood and did boxing and stage combat. She had to imagine where the robot arms would hit and how the power would move.

“I had really good advice from Paul. He came up to me one day when it was one of those scenes where I had to pretend I had these robot arms in front of everyone, and he was like, ‘You’re going to feel very silly, but if you go for it and if you commit to it, it will look sick.’ And I can confirm it does look sick. Paul Bettany is right, to be fair to him.”

Lisa’s Life Before Tommy

Morais built her own backstory for Lisa to make the character feel real. She decided that Lisa was an orphan from Cardiff and that the Blip took her mother. Lisa did not know her father. She learned to pickpocket on Queen Street in Cardiff and had to look after herself. She later went to London, where she met Tommy.

Morais also asked the costume designer, Sarah Young, to give Lisa a small Welsh spoon necklace. She gave the necklace a story: Lisa’s mother gave it to her when she was growing up.

The actress said she drew on the strong girls she knew while growing up in Llanrumney, a area of Cardiff.

“There are so many cool girls — a lot of survivors from where I’m from. I took the little edge from my best friends in Cardiff and brought it to Lisa Molinari.”

A Welsh Accent in the MCU

Morais is from Cardiff, and she convinced showrunner Terry Matalas to let Lisa speak with her real Welsh accent. At first, she auditioned with an Essex accent. She tried northern and American accents too. Then the makeup and hair designer, Fran, suggested she try the Welsh accent. Matalas liked it.

Morais said using her own accent was special because she went to Welsh-medium schools and took part in the Eisteddfods, a Welsh festival of literature, music, and performance. Lisa is the MCU’s first Welsh character.

Tommy and Lisa’s Bond

Lisa and Tommy meet on a bus headed to a psychiatric hospital. They escape together and spend a year pulling scams in London. Morais said the two actors, herself and Ruaridh Mollica, filmed their first scene together in chronological order, which helped them build a real friendship.

Morais described the connection between the characters:

“I think Tommy’s brilliant, but he does need a Lisa to get him through.”

She added that Lisa is good at giving Tommy confidence. Lisa feels that Tommy already has what he needs inside him, but she knows how to bring it out.

Lisa’s story is one of the threads left open for the finale. The nanite in her brain is still a problem, and Jocasta’s influence is not fully gone. The show has confirmed that Lisa is on her way to becoming Coat of Arms, but the finale will show how far that transformation goes.
