Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody has officially recouped its $500,000 initial investment in just 13 weeks and extended its Off-Broadway run for a third time. The show will now play through January 17, 2027 at The Culture Club in Manhattan. The parody musical, created by Dylan MarcAurele and directed by Alan Kliffer, opened on May 26, 2026, following previews that began on May 12. Originally planned as an eight-week run, the production has become one of the surprise theatre hits of the year.
A Small Venue With a Big Impact
The show performs at The Culture Club, a 174-seat venue at 530 West 27th Street. The space had been dark for more than a year before this production moved in. Producer Alan Kliffer and General Manager Christian Palomares shared a statement about the achievement.
“This is an extraordinary moment in today’s theatre landscape, especially so for a musical parody about gay hockey players from Canada. Focusing on strong word-of-mouth and moving with deliberate speed in all steps allowed us to grow the show from a fan phenomenon into a musical with its own credibility.”
The producers also noted that the recoupment proves investing in Off-Broadway can still work. “This happy moment for our team is another strong proof point for investing in Off-Broadway and redefining what musical parodies can do,” they added.
What the Show Is About
Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody is based on Rachel Reid’s bestselling novel and the hit Crave/HBO Max series about two rival hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, who have a secret romantic relationship. The musical follows Shane’s journey “from power center to power bottom,” according to the official synopsis. The stage version includes a score filled with pop-style songs and appearances by characters like Rose Landry and Ilya’s Ass.
The show runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes with no intermission. It is recommended for audiences aged 16 and over.
Cast Changes and Current Lineup
Jay Armstrong Johnson stars as Ilya Rozanov. Troy Iwata plays Shane Hollander, taking over from original star Jimin Moon. The ensemble features Ryann Redmond, Cherry Torres, and Ryan Duncan. Shelby Acosta joined the company as Shane’s Mom & Others starting September 10, replacing Cherry Torres in that role. Daniel Brackett, Dean Cestari, and Sujaya Sunkara serve as standbys.

Critics have largely embraced the parody. Adam Feldman of Time Out New York gave the show four stars, calling it an “unexpected delight” and praising its “knowingly silly” approach. BroadwayWorld’s review roundup shows an average critic rating of 72.5% across multiple outlets. The Guardian described the production as “filthy and hilarious,” noting that audiences “barely stop laughing.”
The musical has found a dedicated fanbase that extends beyond the typical theatre crowd. TheaterMania observed that the show plays well to straight women and suburban housewives in particular. Fans on social media have shared mixed initial reactions when the project was first announced, but the sold-out houses and repeated extensions tell a different story about the show’s staying power.
Cast Album and Tickets
An original cast album is set for release on September 18, 2026, through Center Stage Records. The album features the original Off-Broadway cast, including Jay Armstrong Johnson and Jimin Moon. Two singles have already been released: “Gym Song” and “I Can Host.”
