A sequel series based on the 1991 action classic Point Break has been officially greenlit by AMC and AMC+. The show, set more than three decades after the original film, will follow a new heist crew inspired by the notorious Ex-Presidents gang. Showrunners Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers are leading the project, with production scheduled to begin in early 2027. The first season will consist of eight episodes.
AMC Greenlights Point Break Series for AMC and AMC+
AMC Global Media announced the greenlight on Friday, September 11, 2026. The series will air on AMC and stream on AMC+ in the United States and Canada. French broadcaster Canal+ will air the show in France and across its pay services in Europe, Africa, and Asia. StudioCanal, a Canal+ company, will handle international sales and worldwide distribution outside the U.S. and Canada.
The greenlight comes after the project was first reported to be in development at AMC in December 2025. At AMC’s upfront presentation in late April 2026, Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, said he was “pushing really fast” toward a series pickup.
Plot and Setting: A New Crew Ties to the Ex-Presidents
The official logline for the series reads: “More than three decades after the events of the original Point Break film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged, and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them”.
The series is set in the present day, more than 30 years after the events of the 1991 film. The original movie, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents—a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks while wearing masks of former U.S. presidents. Patrick Swayze played Bodhi, the group’s leader.
Showrunners and Creative Team Behind the Series
Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Kalstein’s previous work includes NCIS: Los Angeles, Treadstone, and Quantico. Rogers has executive produced Sugar and AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire.
Alcon Television Group is the lead studio, with AMC Studios and StudioCanal as co-producers. Alcon owns the rights to Point Break and produced the 2015 movie remake.
Executive producers include Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon Television Group head of television Ben Roberts, and Julia Cohen. M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert, and Daniel Gratton oversee the project for StudioCanal. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as supervising producers.
Production Details: Filming in Australia for 2027 Premiere
Production is set to begin in early 2027 in Australia. The first season will consist of eight episodes. Dan McDermott previously stated, “We’re hoping to be in production, let’s call it end of this year, top of next year in Australia, which is their summer”.

Alcon’s Kosove and Johnson added: “We’re excited to see Point Break move into production with AMC. Dave and Chris have a strong vision for the series and a clear understanding of what makes this world so compelling”.
A Brief History of Point Break on Screen
The original Point Break released in 1991 and became a cult classic. A remake starring Luke Bracey as Johnny and Édgar Ramírez as Bodhi was released in 2015. It performed moderately at the box office but was rejected by critics.
The upcoming series marks the first television adaptation of the franchise. The show is set in the same world as the original film and aims to bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to audiences.
