Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 arrived on Netflix on April 23, 2026, and it quickly became a global talking point. Eleven is living under the watchful eye of Jim Hopper. Life feels normal again, or as normal as it gets in this town.
That calm does not last. A mad scientist gets hold of leftover Upside Down vines and runs secret experiments on them. The result is a wave of mutant plant creatures that start attacking people. The gang decides to handle the threat on their own, and they form the Hawkins Investigators Club, or H.I.C. for short. Dustin gets the club started after the group saves a new student from a monster.
Meet Nikki Baxter, The New Hero
Nikki Baxter is the biggest addition to the cast. Voiced by Odessa A’zion, Nikki is a transfer student with short pink hair and a punk rock style. Her mother, Anna Baxter, voiced by Janeane Garofalo, has taken over as the substitute science teacher while Mr. Clarke is on sabbatical. Nikki’s mother has a history of experimenting on plant life, which becomes important later.
Nikki joins the party after the gang rescues her from a snow shark. She invites them to her house, and Dustin uses the moment to launch the Hawkins Investigators Club. Nikki is described as a tinkerer and a “super punk rock” character who quickly becomes a core part of the group. She even joins their Dungeons & Dragons party as a Barbarian by the end of the season.
The Snow Shark And The Pumpkin Monsters
Season 1 does not hold back on new creatures. The first big threat is a shark-like monster that hides under the snow. Showrunner Eric Robles said the creature was inspired by the classic 1975 film Jaws.
“I grew up watching that movie, and we play with the same trope in the sense that underneath all that snow, there’s something lurking,” Robles told Netflix’s Tudum.
The snow shark takes the local snow-plow driver, Mr. Plow. Eleven uses her powers to tear the monster apart and free Charlie, a kid who was caught in the attack.
A second threat comes from mutated pumpkins. Lucas and Max follow reports of a pumpkin monster at a nearby farm owned by Ella and Danny’s grandfather. They find several mutated pumpkin creatures and destroy them with a combine harvester. The monsters are later called the Gourd Horde. The infection spreads through a pie at the Hawkins Winter Festival, and a contestant named Rosario eats the tainted pie and becomes infected by spores.
The Truth About The Upside Down Monster
The group heads into the forest to find the source of the virus. They discover that a monster from the Upside Down has taken control of Rosario’s body. The trail leads to Daniel Fischer, voiced by Lou Diamond Phillips, who is Mrs. Baxter’s boyfriend. Daniel created the monster, known as the Queen, by using a serum to reanimate a vine from the Upside Down.
The Queen grows stronger from the serum and becomes powerful enough to open a gate inside a cave. The group realizes that if the Queen returns and merges with the Mind Flayer, the results could be disastrous. The stakes are clear: they have to stop her before she gets back to her home dimension.
The Final Battle Against The Queen
The season finale, Chapter Ten: Countdown, brings the whole group together for a large-scale battle. Swarms of smaller creatures attack the gang inside the caves. The scene mirrors the feeling of confronting the Mind Flayer in the original series. Eleven lands the decisive blow, cutting the Queen in half and closing the gate before things collapse completely.
Nikki and her mother both survive the events of the finale. The Baxter family decides to stay in Hawkins instead of moving away. After three weeks, life in Hawkins looks normal again. The friends find a new meeting place in Nikki’s garage, where she joins their Dungeons & Dragons party as a Barbarian.
The final scene shifts back to the Upside Down. The corpse of the Queen lies on the ground, and a small blue flower bursts from her skin, letting out a screech. The danger is not gone. The blue flower sets up the mystery for the next season.
