Lanterns Episode 5, titled “Lights Out,” has left viewers questioning everything they thought they knew about Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The episode, which aired on September 13, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, delivered a shocking fight between the two Green Lanterns. But a new fan theory suggests their brutal confrontation might not have been what it seemed.
The episode wrapped up the 2016 portion of the DC Studios series and ended with John Stewart walking away from the Green Lantern Corps. The fallout between Hal and John was intense, but some fans believe it was all part of a bigger plan. Here is everything you need to know about the theory, the actual events of Episode 5, and why one key detail proves the fight was real.
The Fan Theory About Hal Jordan Being a Clone
A popular fan theory claims that the Hal Jordan who fought John Stewart in the motel room was not the real Hal. According to the theory, that version of Hal was actually the ring’s backup consciousness, sometimes called a “clone.” Fans point to the Spanish subtitles for the episode, which reportedly described the Hal in the fight scene as a “clone.”
The theory suggests that the real Hal Jordan is still alive somewhere, while the “clone” died in the 2026 timeline. This would mean that John and Hal actually resolved their differences and are secretly working together to investigate Lianna, whom they suspect is an ally of Sinestro.
This theory has gained traction online because the episode ended on such a dark note. Many viewers find it hard to believe that the partnership between Hal and John is truly broken.
Why the Fan Theory Does Not Hold Up
There is one clear detail that proves the Hal Jordan in the motel fight was the real one. The ring’s backup consciousness, which Hal activated earlier in the episode, looks like a younger version of him from 2006. The Hal who fought John in the motel room was the older, 2016 version.
The episode also shows that Hal’s ring was completely drained of power. He had to fly a helicopter to reach the motel because he could not use the ring. With such low power, the ring’s consciousness would have faded away, just like other constructs shown in the series. This means John fought the real Hal Jordan and overpowered him.
Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed the episode, explained John’s decision to walk away from the ring in an interview with TheWrap. She described the moment John looks back at the wreckage of Rushville:
“So when he’s walking through the wreckage, and then he has this moment where he turns around and looks back, and there’s only half of his face there. That is the moment where we were thinking, he is a broken man. This is all that’s left of him. He’s looking back – ‘No, I’m not going back. I’m not becoming the person I’ve been. I’m going to be someone else.’”
What Really Happened Between Hal and John in Episode 5
The conflict between Hal and John reached its breaking point in “Lights Out.” The episode picked up right after Hal crashed their car with John trapped inside. Hal left John to burn in the wreckage, telling him that his plan had nothing to do with protecting Rushville.
Zoe Macon, revealed to be the Manhunter, found John in the burning car. She waited for the explosion to do its damage before taking him to a hospital. There, she used her technology to rebuild his burned body. She offered him a deal: she would heal him if he helped get Hal off her back.
John agreed but had his own plan. Once healed, he took a sniper rifle and waited at the motel for Hal. When Hal returned to charge his ring, the two fought. Their fight was about more than just the ring. It was the result of months of resentment and mistrust.
Zoe arrived and blew up the motel. Hal protected John from the blast, but John then used Hal’s vulnerable body as bait. When Zoe came to finish the job, John shot her. He then cut out her heart to prove she was the Manhunter and took the ring and lantern from Hal.
Why John Stewart Gave Up the Green Lantern Ring
After defeating Zoe and taking the ring from Hal, John had everything he had been working toward his entire life. But instead of reciting the Oath and becoming Earth’s new Green Lantern, he walked away.
John met Guardian Lianna in a bar and gave her Zoe’s heart, calling it “your sins, and consequences.” He then left the Power Ring on the table and walked out.
Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Zoe Macon, spoke to Variety about the deal her character offered John:
“She waits for John to burn, and he is hanging by a thread to life. What you understand is she waits for people to be at their most vulnerable point, near death — and she comes in to save them.”
Jagannathan also explained why Zoe saw John as her biggest threat and her best possible protector:
“She quickly assessed who is her biggest threat. She quickly assessed who could be her strongest protector, and it wasn’t Hal — it was John.”
The choice to give up the ring shows how much John has changed. He spent his whole life training to become a Green Lantern, but after seeing the destruction in Rushville and the way the Guardians manipulate their recruits, he decided he wanted no part of it.
