Curry Barker has shared a new detail about his hit horror film Obsession that most viewers completely missed. The director explained that one of the photos Bear finds in his lunchbox was taken from a perspective that makes the scene even more unsettling.
The detail is small but it changes how the whole story of Nikki and Bear feels. Barker talked about it in an interview with Movie TV News. The scene happens early in the film when Bear opens his lunchbox and looks at two photos. One photo has “You” written under it and shows Bear. The other has “Not Me” written under a picture of Nikki.
The Photo That Was Taken From the Ceiling
Barker said the picture of Bear was not taken from a normal angle. The photo looks like it was shot from above, as if the person taking it was standing on the ceiling.
“When you look at the one that says ‘You,’ and it’s a picture of Bear, the picture is taken from the perspective of a ceiling,” Barker said. “The only way she could have taken that picture is if she was on the ceiling.”
The filmmaker thought this small visual clue would make the scene scarier. He wanted viewers to wonder how Nikki got up there and what she was capable of doing.
“I thought it would be creepy if she somehow got onto the ceiling to take it. So who knows what she did?” Barker added.
Barker also said he was surprised that nobody noticed the detail or talked about it after watching the film.
“Nobody ever mentioned, nobody ever picked up on this, so, it didn’t work,” he said. “But, I guess I thought it would be creepy.”
Why the Detail Matters to the Story
The photo detail adds to the film’s main idea about a wish that goes terribly wrong. Bear uses a mysterious object called the One Wish Willow to make Nikki love him more than anyone else in the world. The wish works, but not in the way he wanted.
Nikki’s feelings become obsessive and unstable. She cannot stand being away from Bear. She reacts with panic when he leaves. Her behavior becomes deeply disturbing as her love turns into fixation. The idea that Nikki climbed onto the ceiling just to take a secret photo of Bear shows how far her obsession has gone. It also shows how much Bear’s wish has changed her.
The second photo, the one labeled “Not Me,” is also important. It appears to be a call for help from the real Nikki, who has lost control of her mind and body to the power of the wish. Viewers may have been so focused on that photo that they missed the strange angle of Bear’s picture.
A Film Made on a Small Budget That Became a Huge Hit
Obsession was written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker. It was his first feature film to be released in theaters. The movie was made for just $750,000. It went on to make more than $525 million worldwide. That makes it one of the most profitable films ever made and the highest-grossing horror movie of the year.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before its theatrical release on May 15, 2026. Focus Features bought the film for around $15 million after its festival debut.
The cast includes Michael Johnston as Bear, Inde Navarrette as Nikki, Cooper Tomlinson as Ian, Megan Lawless as Sarah, and Andy Richter as Carter.
Inde Navarrette’s Chilling Performance
Barker also praised Inde Navarrette for her performance in one of the film’s scariest scenes. In the scene, Nikki has a breakdown in the corner of a bedroom. Barker said Navarrette asked him not to give her any instructions before filming.
“She’s like, ‘Don’t say a word. Just let me do it,’” Barker said. “And I was like, ‘Okay,’ because I think she had already heard my spiel over and over again.”
The scene was shot in one take. Barker said Navarrette did many of her scenes in the film in just one take.
Where to Watch Obsession
Obsession is now streaming exclusively on Peacock. The film began streaming on July 17, 2026. It is also available on digital platforms and on demand. The film runs for 1 hour and 48 minutes and is rated R.
