(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Credits BIGBANG as the Inspirational Force Behind Her K-pop Journey

In the latest episode of KBS’s YouTube series “Leemujin Service” released on January 30, (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon opened up about the defining moment that led her to pursue a career as a K-pop idol. The revelation provides a unique glimpse into her journey, showcasing the unexpected influence that ultimately shaped her path in the entertainment industry.

Soyeon, known for her role as the main songwriter of (G)I-DLE and her significant impact on the group’s success both domestically and internationally, took a trip down memory lane to her early days. Contrary to the common narrative of singers discovering their passion through vocals or rap, Soyeon’s initial connection with music was through ballet during her childhood.

“I was into ballet when I was little. I won competitions. But I quit doing ballet while I was in elementary school,” She shared, reflecting on her early artistic pursuits. The pivotal moment occurred during her 3rd-grade years when she stumbled upon BIGBANG’s hit song, “Bad Boy,” during the group’s peak popularity.

Soyeon expressed, “I’ve been only listening to ballet music, and when I first listened to BIGBANG’s songs, it hit me. I knew that’s what I needed to work on. That’s when I was exposed to hip-hop and rapping,” highlighting how BIGBANG’s music steered her away from ballet and ignited her interest in K-pop.

“I loved K-pop idols’ songs. I loved everything about K-pop, and I am here now,” She concluded, giving credit to BIGBANG as a major influence that redirected her artistic path toward becoming a K-pop idol.

Fast forward to the present day, Soyeon stands as a prominent hitmaker, contributing significantly to (G)I-DLE’s triumphs in the music industry. As the group’s main songwriter, she has even earned the prestigious title of an official member of KOMCA – the Korea Music Copyright Association. Her unique journey showcases the diverse inspirations that shape the multifaceted world of K-pop.
