Apple TV confirmed the full casting lineup for Slow Horses Season 7 on Monday, October 19, 2026, two days before the Season 6 finale. The announcement brought five new actors into the Emmy-winning spy drama and settled a major question about a character fans last saw walking away from MI5.

Varada Sethu, known for her role in Doctor Who and Andor, leads the new additions. James Callis is officially back as Claude Whelan, the former MI5 First Desk who left his position at the end of Season 5. The return makes sense given the source material: Season 7 adapts Mick Herron’s novel Bad Actors, a story where Whelan sits at the center of the action.

The Five New Faces Joining Slough House

Apple TV confirmed the new cast members in a press release shared across major outlets. The group brings a mix of science fiction, period drama, and crime television experience to the show.

  • Varada Sethu — Best known recently for Doctor Who and Andor, Sethu also appeared in The Other Bennet Sister and Jurassic World: Dominion.
  • Ethan Moorhouse — Credits include MobLand, Ludwig, and The Moment.
  • Tuppence Middleton — Known for Downton Abbey: A New Era, Mank, and The Forsytes. Middleton previously played Gary Oldman’s wife in the film Mank.
  • Merab Ninidze — A British Independent Film Awards nominee with credits in Homeland, The Courier, and McMafia. Ninidze also had a small voice role in Slow Horses Season 6 as Vassily Rasnokov.
  • Joshua McGuire — A BAFTA nominee whose credits include The Gold, Anatomy of a Scandal, and Lovesick.

Details about which characters the new actors will play remain under wraps. The show has not disclosed their specific roles in the Bad Actors adaptation.

James Callis Returns as Claude Whelan

Claude Whelan exited the picture at the end of Season 5, leaving the MI5 First Desk role behind. His return in Season 7 is not a surprise for readers of Herron’s books. In Bad Actors, Whelan is tasked with tracking down a missing member of a Downing Street think tank. The trail pulls him back toward Regent’s Park and Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas.

James Callis, also known for Battlestar Galactica and the Bridget Jones films, last appeared in Slow Horses during Season 5. The official synopsis for Season 7 places Jackson Lamb and his team on a hunt to find and neutralize a mole inside the British government before the mole can bring down the state.

What Bad Actors Brings to the Screen

Season 7 follows the eighth book in Herron’s Slough House series. The story opens with a disappearance connected to Downing Street and quickly pulls the Slow Horses into a mess involving Regent’s Park, a Russian counterpart operating in London, and layers of backstabbing.

The official synopsis released by Apple TV reads:

“In season 7, Lamb and his Slow Horses are on the hunt to find and neutralise a mole at the heart of British Government before they can bring down the state.”

Ben Vanstone adapted Bad Actors for television and serves as executive producer. Robert McKillop directed the season. Both are newcomers to the series, following the departure of showrunner Will Smith after Season 5.

The Cast Already in Place

Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb, the cantankerous leader of Slough House. Jack Lowden is back as River Cartwright, and Kristin Scott Thomas returns as Diana Taverner. The ensemble also includes Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish, Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Shirley Dander, Rosalind Eleazar as Louisa Guy, and Jonathan Pryce as David Cartwright.

Slow Horses has collected three Emmy awards and multiple BAFTA honors across its run. See-Saw Films produces the series for Apple TV, with Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Dan Hassid, Helen Gregory, Mick Herron, Gail Mutrux, Douglas Urbanski, and Oldman serving as executive producers.
