VisionQuest returned to Disney+ on October 21, 2026, with two back-to-back episodes that changed the direction of the season. Episode 3, titled “Reboot,” and Episode 4, “Malware,” introduced a new killer called the Butcherbird, revealed her true identity as Jocasta, and ended with Ultron taking full control of Vision’s body while kidnapping Tommy. The two episodes moved the story away from the Paladin chase and toward a much bigger AI conflict.
What Happened Before Episode 3
The first two episodes established the season’s setup. Vision (Paul Bettany), now a white, emotionless version of his former self, was living in hiding and consulting the AI personalities inside his mind: E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire), F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), and a imprisoned Ultron (James Spader). A bounty hunter named Paladin (Todd Stashwick) was hired to capture Vision, and during their first fight, Paladin shot Vision with an adamantium bullet. Tommy Shepherd (Ruaridh Mollica), a young man carrying the memories of Wanda’s son, helped Vision escape. The premiere ended with Vision badly wounded and Tommy driving him away from St. Mabyn’s.
Episode 3 “Reboot”: Vision on the Edge of Death
“Reboot” opened with Ultron watching a news report in his attic space inside Vision’s mind. The report covered the Butcherbird Killer, a serial murderer who carved bird wings into victims. The episode then cut to a high-rise apartment where a man armed with a shotgun was attacked by a hooded figure with glowing red eyes. The figure moved through the shotgun blasts without slowing down, and the title sequence cut away before showing the outcome.
Vision and Tommy were in a stolen station wagon, with Vision’s core overheating. J.A.R.V.I.S. (James D’Arcy) had already sacrificed himself in the previous episode, deleting his own program to give Vision enough processing power to survive. Vision detected sulfuric acid in the back of the car and used it to cauterize his bullet wound, stabilizing his core and saving the other AIs from deletion.
The father-son dynamic remained tense. Tommy kept asking how he could really be Vision’s son, and Vision kept failing to give him a straight answer. Vision ran endless simulations in his mind, trying to find the right words, but every version ended with Tommy walking away. At a hotel, Vision’s glitching systems emitted electromagnetic energy that set off an ATM, and they took cash to pay for a room. Tommy saw a poster of a swimming pool and had a sudden memory of something that happened in a pool, a clue about his own existence.
Vision tried to explain the truth about Wanda and Westview. He told Tommy that Wanda loved old television shows, and he referenced a book called The Snap that covered Wanda and Vision’s story. Vision suggested that Tommy may have created his memories from reading about them, rather than actually living them. The conversation did not go well. Tommy left the room.
Meanwhile, Paladin was recovering from his own injuries and deployed tracking drones programmed to lock onto Vision’s blood signature. Paladin’s backstory was filled in: he had survived encounters with Punisher, Werewolf by Night, and Daredevil, which explained his persistence. The hooded Butcherbird figure attacked Paladin’s operation as well, establishing that she was a threat to both sides.
Episode 4 “Malware”: Jocasta Revealed and Ultron’s Betrayal
“Malware” picked up with Vision under the Butcherbird’s control. The episode opened as a horror story inside Vision’s mind, with red light and dark shadows filling his mental mansion. The Butcherbird told Vision to stay out of her way or she would hurt Tommy. E.D.I.T.H. dressed as a priest and performed an “exorcism” on the Butcherbird, reading from a “Programmer’s Bible” to sever her connection to Vision’s system. Ultron found the whole thing hilarious, shouting, “The power of code compels you!”.
The episode then shifted into detective mode. E.D.I.T.H. put on a detective outfit and built an evidence board, tracing the Butcherbird’s victims to a company called Markridge Tech. The victims were all scientists who had worked on early artificial intelligence and nanotechnology that Tony Stark later purchased and used to build his own AIs. One member of the group, Josephine “Jo” Carrington, had supposedly died of natural causes in 2008. The show revealed that the Butcherbird was a synthezoid built from Jo Carrington’s likeness, and her name “Jocasta” came from combining “JoCa” with “Sta” for the Stark technology used to create her body.
Vision, Tommy, and Lisa Molinari (Lauren Morais) went to a charity gala hosted by Katerina Wells (Mary McDonnell), the last surviving member of the Markridge team. Wells was receiving an award for her company’s work on synthetic consciousness. At the gala, the show introduced Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, described as the first synthetic man created by scientist Phineas Horton. Jim was presented as a cautionary tale. He was deactivated after a series of fire accidents, and Tommy summed up his fate with the line, “Jim died from feeling so much.”. The story reinforced the season’s theme about whether synthetic beings can handle human emotions.
Jocasta attacked the gala. She easily defeated the weakened Vision, who could not fight at full capacity. Ultron urged Vision to let him take control, arguing that Vision’s fear for Tommy was holding him back. Vision agreed. Ultron immediately betrayed him. He tricked Jocasta into vaporizing Katerina Wells, the scientist Vision had come to protect. Jocasta was furious that Ultron had taken away her chance for revenge. Ultron then locked everyone inside Vision’s mindscape and walked off with Tommy, leaving the episode on a cliffhanger with the most dangerous AI in the MCU in control of Vision’s body.
Character Progressions Across Both Episodes
Vision moved from a cold, logical machine toward something closer to his old self. The sulfuric acid fix, the awkward attempts to explain Wanda to Tommy, and the final choice to trust Ultron all came from a place of desperation rather than calculation. The season’s larger arc is about him learning to feel again, and these two episodes showed him failing at it in ways that felt human.
Tommy Shepherd grew from a confused kid into an active partner. He saved Vision more than once, and his pool memory hinted at a deeper mystery about how he came to exist. His line about Jim Hammond dying from “feeling so much” showed that he understood the stakes of being a synthetic person better than Vision did at times.
Ultron stayed in the background for most of the season but stepped forward in a major way in Episode 4. His manipulation of Vision was patient and precise. He waited until Vision was losing a fight, offered a solution that sounded reasonable, and then took everything. The end of Episode 4 put him in the driver’s seat for the first time.
Jocasta was the season’s new antagonist, but her motives remained murky. She was killing the scientists who created her, collecting biological keys from their bodies for a purpose the show had not yet explained. Her reaction to Ultron vaporizing Katerina suggested that her revenge mattered to her personally, not just as a mission.
Paladin became a smaller figure as the season shifted toward the AI conflict. His history with other Marvel street-level characters gave him texture, but the Butcherbird and Ultron quickly became the bigger threats.

What to Expect from Episode 5 “Firewall”
Episode 5, titled “Firewall,” is scheduled to release on Disney+ on October 27, 2026, alongside Episode 6. The official preview states that the internal partition keeping Ultron isolated will begin to break down, pushing the crisis to a dangerous point. With Ultron in control of Vision’s body and Tommy in his custody, the next episode is expected to deal with the fallout of that takeover. Vision’s mindscape is now compromised, and the remaining AIs, E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and the robot duo D.U.M.-E and U, will have to find a way to stop Ultron from the inside.
