The Terminal List Season 2 arrived on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with all eight episodes dropping at once. The new season moves away from the personal revenge story of Season 1 and turns James Reece into a globe-trotting operator caught between the CIA, a resurgent Al-Qaeda, and a conspiracy that reaches back into his own family history. Based on Jack Carr‘s second novel, True Believer, the season follows Reece as he tries to earn a presidential pardon, seek treatment for his brain tumor, and stop a threat that stretches from Mozambique to Moscow and Langley.
What Happened Before Season 2
Season 1 ended with James Reece (Chris Pratt) finishing the list of people he held responsible for the ambush of his Navy SEAL platoon and the murders of his wife and daughter. The final name on that list was Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), Reece’s former best friend and a CIA operative who had been involved in the conspiracy. Reece killed Edwards and then took Edwards’ boat out to sea, expecting to die from the terminal brain tumor he and his men had developed after an illegal medical experiment.
The season ended with Reece adrift, branded a domestic terrorist by some and a hero by others. Reporter Katie Buranek (Constance Wu) had helped publish his story and became a public figure in the process, defending Reece on television while wrestling with the violence he had carried out. The story also introduced the prequel series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf in 2025, which focused on Ben Edwards and brought several characters into the larger universe, including Raife Hastings (Tom Hopper), Mo Farooq (Dar Salim), and Jules Landry (Luke Hemsworth).
Season 2 Episode-by-Episode Breakdown and Character Arcs
James Reece: From Drifting at Sea to a New Mission
Season 2 opens with Reece 172 days into his self-imposed exile on the Indian Ocean. He is alone, haunted by hallucinations of Ben Edwards, and unsure whether he wants to live. A storm forces him to fight for survival, and he eventually makes landfall in Mozambique. He finds shelter at the Hastings family game reserve, where he spends months helping fight poachers and slowly rebuilding his physical and mental strength.
His peace ends when he takes a wounded friend to a hospital and his location is exposed. CIA officer Freddy Strain (Gabriel Luna) brings Reece in, offering a full presidential pardon and surgery for his tumor in exchange for help tracking Mo Farooq, a former ally suspected of working with Al-Qaeda. Reece does not believe Mo has turned, but he takes the deal because it is the only path back to a normal life.
Chris Pratt described the character’s season-long arc as a man whose body has not died but whose spirit is ready to let go. “It’s a guy whose body has not died yet, but whose spirit seems to be willing to let go,” Pratt said. “But what I know about these characters, the more I spend time with these Navy SEALs, is that they don’t have the quit button.”
Katie Buranek: Reporter Turned Target
Katie Buranek returns with a larger role. She is now a well-known journalist because of her work on Reece’s story, but her fame also makes her a target. She becomes involved with Vasili Adrenov (Costa Ronin), a Ukrainian oligarch who is trying to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine. When Adrenov’s convoy is attacked and Katie is injured, she is pulled into the same conspiracy that Reece is investigating.
Katie eventually discovers that her name has been attached to an article she never wrote, part of a disinformation campaign designed to shape public opinion around the assassination of a Russian president. She works with Raife Hastings and Yana (Olga Kurylenko) to connect Adrenov to Oliver Grey (Jeremy Bobb) and the Kestrel conspiracy. Constance Wu’s character becomes the “warrior of truth” in the season, using her reporting to expose the people manipulating the media.
Raife Hastings: From Weapons Supplier to Investigator
Raife Hastings (Tom Hopper) gets a full storyline of his own in Season 2. He works for a defense procurement company and discovers that weapons shipments intended for Ukraine are being diverted into the hands of terrorists. His investigation leads him to Kestrel, a defunct CIA program that has been secretly revived.
Raife’s search puts him in conflict with powerful senators and eventually with Oliver Grey, a CIA analyst working for the Russian ultranationalist known as the Colonel. Raife also saves Katie’s life after she is attacked, and the two form an unlikely investigative team. Tom Hopper’s character is one of the most important additions to the main series, having first appeared in Dark Wolf.
Mo Farooq: The Suspect Who Was Never the Enemy
Mo Farooq (Dar Salim) is the central mystery of Season 2. The CIA believes he has joined Al-Qaeda, but Reece refuses to accept that the man he served with would betray his country. When Reece finally finds Mo, he learns that Mo has been working undercover for the CIA all along, trying to stop a terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11.
Mo is a mirror to Reece: a grief-driven, loyal warrior operating in moral gray zones. His story is tied to Jules Landry, who is revealed to be the person manipulating intelligence and supplying information to the terrorists. Mo survives the season, but his arc raises questions about how far a soldier can go before the line between duty and betrayal disappears.
Freddy Strain: The Brother Reece Could Not Save
Freddy Strain (Gabriel Luna) is the new brother-in-arms who brings Reece back into the fight. A skilled sniper and a family man, Freddy is the one who makes the impossible shot during the rescue of Mo Farooq in Episode 5. His death in the finale becomes the emotional turning point of the season.
Freddy is killed during the assassination of Russian President Drozdov at the peace summit in Odesa, Ukraine. After the attack, Vasili Adrenov reveals that Freddy was never the intended target. The sniper was meant to kill Reece, and the attack was connected to Reece’s father, Thomas Reece. Freddy’s death sends Reece into a new mission: finding everyone responsible.
Gabriel Luna’s character is described as a “skilled family-man and sniper whose heartbreaking fate honors the stories of real SEALs”. His death is one of the most consequential moments in the season and sets up the final act.
Jules Landry and Oliver Grey: The Enemy Inside
Jules Landry (Luke Hemsworth) appears to be a CIA officer overseeing counterterrorism operations, but he is eventually revealed to be the person feeding information to the terrorists and working with Oliver Grey. Grey is a CIA analyst who has been in the background throughout the season, but he is the one pulling the strings. He works for Ivan Zarkov, also known as the Colonel, a former Soviet military intelligence officer with ties to the GRU.
The conspiracy is not simply about terrorism. It is a coup designed to destabilize Russia, reignite the war in Ukraine, and allow Zarkov and his ultranationalist followers to seize power.
How Season 2 Ends
The finale, “Fathers and Sons,” begins with Reece saying goodbye to Freddy Strain at an airbase in Odesa. The US government grants Reece a presidential pardon, and he is offered surgery for his brain tumor. He could walk away, but he chooses to find the people responsible for Freddy’s death.
Reece and Raife Hastings piece together the truth: the assassination was part of a larger coup, and Oliver Grey was directly involved. Katie Buranek discovers that Vasili Adrenov used Voltstreem and other media outlets to spread misinformation about the assassination, laying the groundwork for the Colonel’s political ambitions.
Reece tracks down Adrenov and demands to know who killed Freddy. Adrenov reveals that Freddy was not the target. The sniper was meant to kill Reece, and the attack was connected to Thomas Reece, James’s father, and something he had done to the Russians many years earlier. Adrenov refuses to explain further, and Reece kills him with a hatchet.
The season ends with Reece learning that his father’s past is tied to the conspiracy. Katie gives Reece her completed book, fittingly titled “True Believer,” a nod to the novel the season is based on. Reece has a pardon, a chance at surgery, and a new list of people to find. The story does not close the door on the conspiracy; it opens a new one.
