Holland Taylor has explained why she stopped signing contracts for Two and a Half Men after six seasons. The 83-year-old actress, who played Evelyn Harper on the hit CBS sitcom, said the show “never paid her very well” even after she earned four Emmy nominations. Her decision came as a surprise to producers, who assumed she was trying to negotiate more money.

The Paycheck That Never Changed

Taylor shared the details on the October 21 episode of the Alchemy with Anthony Mason podcast. She said her salary on Two and a Half Men stayed at the same level she had earned on a previous series “like eight years before”. Despite the show’s massive success and her four Emmy nods for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, a raise never came.

“They never paid me very well on that show. I was paid on that show what I had made on a series like eight years before or something. And I got four Emmy nominations and they never gave me a raise. They usually do.”

Taylor’s Emmy nominations for the role came in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010 while she was a series regular. She had already won an Emmy in 1999 for her work on The Practice before joining the CBS comedy.

What Producers Said When She Refused to Renew

Producers were “astonished” by her choice to let her contract lapse, Taylor recalled. She said the team believed she was bargaining for more money and told her they could not afford to pay her more.

“I said, ‘You could actually pay me the cost of this building, but don’t bother because I don’t want to continue on under contract.’ And they said, ‘But we can’t afford to give you more.’ I said, ‘I’m cool with it. I just will come back as a guest from time to time.’”

Taylor noted that her co-star Jon Cryer saw a major pay increase when his contract came up. “I don’t know, Jon [Cryer] quadrupled his salary or something like that,” she said. “That’s what they usually do when the contract runs out”.

A Guest Star on Her Own Terms

After six years as a contracted cast member, Taylor switched to a recurring guest star arrangement. She said the change gave her control over her schedule and the freedom to turn down appearances she did not want to do.

“I stopped being under contract. So, in other words, they would say, ‘Can you do a guest appearance at the end of March?’ And I would say, ‘No, I cannot. I only did it if I wanted to do it.’”

Taylor remained part of the show through its full run. Two and a Half Men aired for 12 seasons from 2003 to 2015. She continued to appear as Evelyn Harper occasionally after her contract ended, including in the final seasons.

The Show’s Bigger Cast Shakeups

Taylor’s contract decision was not the only major change on Two and a Half Men. Charlie Sheen, who played her on-screen son Charlie Harper, left the show in 2011 after a public dispute with executive producer Chuck Lorre and his struggles with substance abuse. At the time, Sheen was reportedly earning $1.8 million per episode, making him one of the highest-paid stars on television.

Ashton Kutcher joined the series as billionaire Walden Schmidt after Sheen’s exit. Jon Cryer stayed with the show for all 12 seasons as Alan Harper.

Taylor said she “loved a lot about that show” but felt the production was not generous with its cast. “They were not full of courtesies,” she said.

What Holland Taylor Is Doing Now

Taylor currently stars in the Apple TV series Brothers alongside Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The podcast episode where she discussed her Two and a Half Men exit also covered her early acting training with Stella Adler.
