Patrick Stewart died on October 29, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86. His final film role will be as Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in theaters on December 18, 2026. Months before his death, Stewart made it clear that he had no plans to stop acting, telling an interviewer that he would “always and forever be an actor.”
Patrick Stewart’s Final Role Is Professor X in Avengers Doomsday
Marvel Studios confirmed that Stewart’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday is his final on-screen role. The film marks the ninth time Stewart played Charles Xavier on the big screen, a role he first brought to life in 2000’s X-Men.
The movie brings back several original X-Men actors alongside Stewart. Ian McKellen returns as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
A teaser released in January 2026 showed Stewart’s Professor X and McKellen’s Magneto playing chess in the ruined Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The scene called back to their long history in the X-Men films, which began more than two decades earlier.
Marvel Studios described Doomsday as Stewart’s “final on-screen appearance” in an official tribute. The studio also confirmed that Stewart will not appear in the follow-up film, Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for 2027.
What Patrick Stewart Said About Retiring Before His Death
In July 2026, Stewart gave what became his final interview to TV Insider, marking the 40th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation. When asked about retirement, he acknowledged that roles become harder to find with age but said he still loved working.
“As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older. That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig’s head in Riz Ahmed’s brilliant new series Bait. I can’t imagine ever officially ‘retiring.’ I’ll always and forever be an actor.”
Stewart also named Jean-Luc Picard as the most significant role of his career, telling the outlet that he would be “forever grateful” for the chance to be part of the Star Trek franchise.
The retirement rumors had started in November 2025, when a YouTube commentator claimed Stewart would step away from acting after finishing Doomsday. The claim spread online for months, even though Stewart had not said anything of the kind. His July interview directly addressed the speculation.
Tributes from Marvel, Hugh Jackman and the Russo Brothers
Marvel Studios released a statement calling Stewart “a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman.” The studio said he brought Professor Xavier to life “with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity,” defining the character for generations of fans.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, shared his own memory of working with Stewart.
“I’ll never forget the first time I saw Sir Patrick Stewart on the set of the first X-Men. After years of knowing him as the inimitable Captain Picard, I was in awe — and he turned out to be everything I had seen on screen and more.”
Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart in eight films including X-Men, Logan, and The Sheep Detectives, posted a tribute on Instagram.
“We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days.”
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo also shared a photo of Stewart from the film. “We’ve been lucky enough to work with some of our childhood heroes. And Sir Patrick Stewart will always be one of them,” they wrote. “A legendary actor with an unmistakeable presence, and an unmatched integrity. Thank you for entertaining all of us, sir.”
