Haley Stevens, a Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, walked into a Detroit church on Sunday, November 1, 2026, alongside Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Hours later, she stood before reporters to explain why she had turned her back on her own party’s Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. The questions were sharp. The crowd was angry. And one voice from the crowd cut through everything: “Haley Stevens is a traitor!”
That moment became the center of a fast-moving media storm. Mehdi Hasan, the editor-in-chief of Zeteo and one of the most followed progressive commentators in the United States, watched the clip and posted four words on X that summed up the entire scene for his audience: “This is her life now. Good.”
What Haley Stevens Actually Did
The background matters here because the heckling did not come out of nowhere. Stevens lost Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August 2026. After that loss, she publicly endorsed El-Sayed and spent months telling voters that Mike Rogers had to be defeated. She called Rogers a “rubber stamp” for Donald Trump’s agenda, according to reporting from the Detroit Free Press.
Then, on the Sunday before Election Day, she reversed course. Stevens appeared with Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit, swaying to gospel music in the pews, while El-Sayed campaigned at a different church a few miles away. About an hour later, she posted a video announcing her endorsement of Rogers.
“Our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said in the video. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”
The break followed a public fight over a controversial outside advertisement produced by a PAC linked to Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks. Stevens called the ad antisemitic and demanded that El-Sayed condemn it. El-Sayed’s campaign said it had nothing to do with the ad, and El-Sayed said he disagreed with its contents. Stevens also pointed to El-Sayed’s decision to campaign with streamer Hasan Piker, a move she said made her feel unwelcome.
The Reporter Question That Ended the Press Conference
Standing next to Rogers outside the church, Stevens faced a wall of cameras and microphones. One reporter asked the obvious question: how could she support a candidate whose policies she had spent months opposing?
“Well, look, nothing is perfectโ” Stevens began.
A heckler off camera shouted her down. “Haley’s a traitor! Haley Stevens is a traitor!” The press conference ended almost immediately. Stevens turned and walked away, with Rogers following behind her. CNN captured the moment in a clip that spread quickly across social media.
“How can you support a candidate who stands so firmly with some of the policies that you stood so firmly against?” โ a reporter to Haley Stevens, moments before the heckler interrupted.
Stevens later told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that the decision was “just a weight off my shoulders.” She said El-Sayed had been getting “angrier and angrier” and that she no longer felt welcome in his campaign. Cooper pressed her repeatedly, asking what had changed overnight. Stevens did not offer a direct answer.
Mehdi Hasan’s “This Is Her Life Now” Post and What He Said Next
Mehdi Hasan did not stop at four words. In a separate post on X, he called Stevens a “disturbed, deranged, dishonest woman” and pointed out that less than 48 hours earlier she had told The New York Times she was still backing El-Sayed. He also questioned how the Democratic establishment had ever put Stevens forward as a candidate, calling her a “complete traitor” to the party, as reported by news outlets.
Hasan went further in a reply to a post from Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, who accused Stevens of being used as a “tool” for racism and religious bigotry. Hasan wrote that “Islamophobia” was “at the core” of her endorsement. In another post, he simply wrote, “She’s evil.”
The Zeteo editor also took his argument to television. Appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Hasan laid out his case in plain terms:
“This was ginned up as a fake controversy by Haley Stevens, the charlatan โฆ as an excuse for her doing what she was going to do anyways.” โ Mehdi Hasan on Piers Morgan Uncensored, as published by Zeteo.
Hasan argued that the real scandal was not the ad but the “old school white supremacist stuff” coming from the White House, including Islamophobic attacks against El-Sayed. “They’re losing,” Hasan said. “The economy is bad so they go immediately to racism, Islamophobia, and that’s why this ad is such a red herring.”
Piers Morgan Calls Stevens an “Absolute Charlatan”
Piers Morgan did not hold back either. In a post on X on November 1, 2026, the British broadcaster wrote:
“Wowโฆ what an absolute charlatan. Three days ago, Stevens said she was voting for El-Sayed. I hate politicians who switch sides at the last minute before elections. And everyone else always ends up hating them too. Just the ultimate political treachery.”
Morgan’s comment added a transatlantic voice to the backlash. His phrasingโ”absolute charlatan”โwas quickly shared alongside Hasan’s “This is her life now” post, turning the heckling moment into a running media story about loyalty and last-minute political reversals.
Staff Walk Out as the Backlash Grows
The reaction inside Stevens’ own office was just as dramatic. Her longtime chief of staff, Justin German, resigned on Sunday morning along with communications director Logan Basch and other members of her team, according to The Hill.
“We are shocked and heartbroken by Congresswoman Stevens’s decision to support Mike Rogers,” German wrote in a statement. He encouraged “everyone to exercise their civic duty, vote for Abdul and Democrats up and down the ballot.”
Stevens’ former Senate campaign communications director, Arik Wolk, called the endorsement “ridiculous and pathetic” and said Stevens had “betrayed” the values she claimed to care about. The Democratic National Committee’s Black Caucus chair, Virgie Rollins, called Stevens a “sellout who used Black Michiganders for a political stunt.”
At least eight House Democrats wanted Stevens removed from the House Democratic caucus or otherwise disciplined over the endorsement, Democratic Representatives Lateefah Simon, Marc Veasey, and Emily Randall were among those calling for her removal, Axios reported.
El-Sayed Raises $1.2 Million in Four Hours
The heckling and the staff resignations were not the only numbers that moved. Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign raised $1.2 million within four hours of Stevens’ announcement, according to The Hill. By the end of Sunday, the campaign had raised $2.4 million, with more than 26,000 people contributing for the first time, The Guardian reported.
El-Sayed brushed off the endorsement when reporters asked him about it. “None of this matters,” he said outside a “Souls to the Polls” event in Detroit. “At the end of the day, I actually don’t think about Haley Stevens. I care more about policy than politics.”
A New York Times and Siena College poll released before the endorsement showed El-Sayed leading Rogers by 11 percentage points. That survey did not measure any effect from Stevens’ decision.
Trump Says “I’d Love to Have Her” as Republicans Celebrate
Republicans welcomed the defection. Donald Trump told reporters outside Air Force One that he had called Stevens to thank her. “She did the right thing,” Trump said. Asked whether he wanted Stevens to switch parties, the president was direct: “I’d love to have her.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he had sent Stevens a note praising her courage. The Republican National Committee’s spokesman, Hunter Lovell, said the endorsement showed Rogers’ appeal beyond Republican voters. “When Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who ran against Abdul El-Sayed and knows him better than anyone, stands with Mike Rogers, Michigan should take notice,” Lovell said.

Stevens, for her part, insisted she remains a Democrat. “I still love the party,” she told reporters. “I’ve done a ton for the party.” Her press conference ended before she could take more questions.
