The Gilded Age returned to HBO on November 1, 2026, and the new season wasted no time showing that Bertha Russell’s greatest social triumph came with a price she never expected to pay. The woman who conquered New York high society now finds herself fighting to save the one relationship that made her rise possible. Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha, has been open about what lies ahead: a hard, unglamorous wake-up call for a character who always believed she could control everything.

Where Season 3 Left Bertha and George

The third season ended with Bertha on top of the world. She had pulled off the ultimate social coup by marrying her daughter Gladys to Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, breaking Mrs. Astor’s grip on New York society and even ending the ban on divorced women attending major events. The Newport Ball was her crowning achievement.

The morning after told a very different story. George Russell (Morgan Spector) told his wife he could not forgive her for using their daughter as a pawn in her social war. He had nearly died from a gunshot wound and, in his recovery, had come to see his marriage differently. “The shooting has made me examine my life, and I don’t like everything I see,” George told Bertha before leaving their Newport mansion. He did not say the word divorce, but he walked out. Bertha was left staring out a window, shattered.

Carrie Coon Warns of a Rude Awakening

Speaking to Radio Times ahead of the Season 4 premiere, Carrie Coon explained exactly where Bertha stands at the start of the new chapter. Bertha begins the season focused on Gladys, hoping that time will heal the damage done to her family. That hope does not last.

“She doesn’t realise how unmoored George has become, and so it’s a pretty rude awakening for her.”

Coon added that Bertha will need what she called a “tremendous intervention, both literal and figurative,” to get things back on track. The actress also made clear that Bertha will not simply roll over. In true Bertha fashion, she has a plan, she goes after it, and she sacrifices herself again. Even when George humiliates her, Coon said, Bertha still chooses him. She will work very hard to preserve both George and their marriage.

The Season 4 Premiere Puts Bertha Through the Wringer

The first episode of Season 4, titled “Ring the Bells,” opens with Bertha across the Atlantic in England, at the ducal estate where Gladys is giving birth. What should be a joyful moment turns into a medical nightmare. The baby is in a breech position, and the doctor tells Bertha and the Duke that he may have to choose between saving mother and child.

Gladys survives, but the birth comes with a devastating consequence. The doctor has to remove her uterus to stop a hemorrhage, meaning she will not be able to have more children. Bertha is present for all of it, watching her daughter nearly die.

“Bertha almost loses her daughter. She almost lost her grandson, and, within a year, she almost lost her husband, and I think what that means for Bertha is that her priorities have never been more clear.”

Back in New York, the Russell household is frosty. George has not returned home. Bertha tries to urge him to come back, but he accuses her of emotional manipulation, especially because her attempt came at a moment of weakness for him. The couple is still apart, and neither seems eager to close the gap.

A Family Falling Apart While Society Watches

The Russell family’s troubles are not happening in private. The Season 4 logline from HBO makes the stakes clear: “Bertha Russell changed society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences”. Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) sees an opening to regain her lost position, and the teaser trailer shows her declaring, “Vengeance shall be mine,” while Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon) reminds her that vengeance is supposed to belong to the Lord. Agnes replies, “Not if we want it done properly”.

Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) is forging a new path for herself, and Peggy Scott (Denรฉe Benton) is working to be accepted by her future in-laws, the Kirkland family. Phylicia Rashad returns as Elizabeth Kirkland, who is not making Peggy’s path easy. The season’s tagline warns, “In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for”.

Fans Are Split on Who Deserves Sympathy

Social media reaction to the Russell marriage crisis has been lively. Some viewers are firmly on Bertha’s side. “If George isn’t on his knees grovelling by the end of the season then we ride at dawn,” one fan posted on X. Another wrote, “Girl, they’re getting a divorce”. A different corner of the fandom is worried that the show will make Bertha miserable for most of the season, with one Tumblr user writing, “not if it’s going to be Bertha being miserable for 7/8 episodes, begging and pleading for George’s forgiveness”.

The debate reflects the core tension of Bertha’s character. She is ruthless, ambitious, and willing to sacrifice almost anything for her family’s place in society. The question Season 4 is asking is whether the one thing she was not willing to lose, her partnership with George, can survive the damage she has already done.
