Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan have finally spoken in detail about the January 2025 knife attack at their Mumbai home. In a candid interview on Koffee With Karan Season 9, the couple addressed the wild conspiracy theories that spread online, recalled the terrifying night, and shared how their youngest son, Jeh, witnessed the entire incident. Kareena called the rumours “bizarre” and “really bad,” while Saif revealed the main theory was that Kareena herself stabbed him.
The Interview That Broke the Silence
The couple appeared on the fourth episode of Koffee With Karan‘s final season, which began streaming on November 4, 2026, on JioHotstar and The Peacock Hub. Host Karan Johar noted that Saif’s composed appearance when he left the hospital had sparked a different narrative online, leading to an array of conspiracy theories. The conversation, which touched on their professional journeys and life in the film industry, took a sobering turn as they revisited the attack.
Kareena Calls Theories “Bizarre” and “Really Bad”
Kareena did not hold back when addressing the rumours. She questioned the logic behind the theories, pointing out that the police had caught the attacker.
“I don’t understand the conspiracy theories. That means that the people thought that cops are in cahoots with us because they obviously caught the guy! So then? Are they in the conspiracy? Saif’s son took him to hospital with Hari [house help]. It is really bad that people had those concerns.”
Saif, meanwhile, took a more philosophical view.
“I don’t expect people not to have conspiracy theories.” He then revealed the main theory: “‘You stabbed me’, that was the main one.”
Kareena sarcastically responded to that claim, asking, “So the cops basically also are in cahoots with us?”. The couple also addressed questions about why there was no driver at home that night. Saif explained simply, “He goes home to his family in the evening”.
What Really Happened on January 16, 2025
The attack took place in the early hours of January 16, 2025, when an intruder entered Saif and Kareena’s 12th-floor apartment in Bandra through the fire escape. According to the prosecution, the intruder first confronted Eliyama Philip, the nurse caring for their younger son, Jehangir (Jeh). He warned her to make “no noise” and attacked her when she tried to pick up the child. When asked what he wanted, he allegedly replied, “Paisa chahiye” and demanded ₹1 crore.
Her screams alerted Saif and Kareena, who rushed to the room. Saif intervened to protect the women and his son. Kareena later revealed in her police statement that Saif was the first to intervene and prevented the attacker from reaching Jeh.
Saif’s Injuries and the Fight to Save Him
Saif sustained six stab wounds, including a serious injury to his thoracic spinal cord. A 2.5-inch piece of the knife was lodged in his spine and had to be removed during emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. Doctors also treated injuries to his hand and neck, for which he underwent plastic surgery. Kareena recalled the severity of his condition: “You could not walk!” She shared how the doctor had to move his nerves to take out the knife from his spine. “I was a wreck, he was fine,” she said.
Saif described the night as “the worst night in the history of nights”. He spoke about the strength it took to remain composed, especially with their children witnessing the aftermath.
Jeh Witnessed the Attack and Gave Saif a Plastic Sword
Kareena shared that their youngest son, Jeh, saw the entire incident with his own eyes. In a moment that captures the innocence of a child trying to process trauma, Jeh later gifted Saif his plastic sword to protect him in the future.
“He thinks of Saif as some sort of Iron Man,” Kareena said.
Saif later shared more about Jeh’s gift in a separate interview, saying the child told him, “Sleep with this next time”. The gesture became a way for the family to cope with the horror of what happened.
Taimur’s Fear and Ibrahim’s Anger
The couple’s elder son, Taimur, also witnessed the chaos. Kareena recalled that the first thing Taimur said was, “Abba are you going to die?”. The nine-year-old accompanied Saif to the hospital along with their household help, Hari.
Saif’s eldest son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, was deeply affected. Saif recalled waking up after surgery to find Ibrahim in tears and extremely angry, wanting to find the person responsible and defend his father.
“I don’t normally see him express himself in that way, but he was in tears and feeling very angry and wanting to defend and catch that fellow.”
Kareena’s Desperate Run for Help
Kareena described the frantic moments after the attack, when she ran out onto the road in her night T-shirt to hail a rickshaw while Saif was bleeding.
“In my night T-shirt. Luckily, no one got that on video, Karan. I was screaming on the road. I was like, ‘Ruko, ruko.’ It was like a movie scene. I didn’t have the time to put on my pyjamas. I have run on the road. Like nobody knows this. I am saying it for the first time.”
She also remembered seeing Saif in the lift before they left. Looking at him, she told him, “Saif, don’t do this.” She revealed that she could not sleep for six months after the attack because she was so scared.
The Attacker and the Legal Case
Police arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam two days after the attack in Thane. They alleged that he was a Bangladeshi national staying illegally in India and had been using the name Vijay Das. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for alleged armed robbery, causing grievous hurt, and house-trespass. The case also includes charges under the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules.
As of October 2026, Shariful Islam has repeatedly moved the Mumbai court seeking to plead guilty and has asked for leniency in sentencing. The maximum punishment under the sections he is charged with is life imprisonment.
