Abbott Elementary returned for its sixth season on October 7, 2026, and the teachers of Willard R. Abbott Elementary are facing a problem that hits much closer to home than broken heaters or budget cuts. A new storyline about how teachers decide who passes and who fails has become the center of the season, and it is making characters like Barbara Howard and Jacob Hill question everything they thought they knew about the school system.
The season also brings major changes. Gregory Eddie is now the assistant principal. Janine Teagues is back in the classroom after her time at the district. Ava Coleman is trying to prove she is more than just a chaotic leader. And a new teacher named Elsa Hardaway is already causing trouble for Melissa Schemmenti. The show is in its sixth year, but the stakes feel as fresh as ever.
The Grading Problem That Changes How You See Report Cards
The most talked-about storyline of season 6 so far comes from episode 5, titled “Courtney,” which aired on November 4, 2026. The episode puts Barbara and Jacob in a seminar for teachers. Barbara is mostly there for the free food, and Jacob is there to spend time with her. But what they hear at the seminar shocks them.
A new teacher at the seminar asks the host a simple question. What should a teacher do if some students are falling behind while the district demands that the curriculum be finished on time? The host’s answer is blunt: “Yup, teach to the test.” When the teacher asks if that means holding students back at the end of the year, the host does not say yes directly. But he suggests that teachers can adjust a few grades here and there to make sure students move on.
Barbara and Jacob cannot believe what they are hearing. What shocks them even more is that other teachers in the room start admitting they already do this. One teacher says she has turned what used to count as an F into a passing grade. Others nod and say they do the same thing.
The practice is not just one teacher breaking the rules. It is a system-wide habit, and it is being quietly supported by the people who are supposed to be teaching the teachers.
This discovery matters because Barbara has spent decades in the classroom. She has seen every trend and every district rule. But hearing teachers openly say they change failing grades into passing ones so that students can move forward is something she was not prepared for. Jacob, who is now a liaison representative, may be in a better position to push back against the practice than he was before.
The episode does not give a simple answer. It shows that the problem is bigger than one bad teacher. It is about a system that pressures teachers to move students along, even when those students are not ready. And it leaves Barbara and Jacob in a position where they have to decide what to do with what they now know.
Gregory’s Big Promotion Comes With Big Problems
Gregory Eddie (played by Tyler James Williams) started season 6 with a new title: assistant principal. The promotion came after the season 5 finale, and it puts Gregory in a position he has wanted since the very first episode. But the job is not as easy as it looks.
In episode 2, titled “Check-Ins,” Gregory tries to do two jobs at once. He is still teaching his class, and he is also handling the assistant principal duties. He sets up daily check-ins with every teacher, creates a makeshift office in his classroom, and tries to solve every problem himself. The result is exactly what Ava Coleman (played by Janelle James) predicted: Gregory gets overwhelmed. Teachers line up for his attention, and his students are left waiting.
“I have two roles this year. Teacher me and assistant principal me … It’s going great,” Gregory says in the season 6 trailer, and the sarcasm is clear even in a thirty-second clip.
The interesting part is how Ava handles the situation. Instead of saying “I told you so,” she lets Gregory struggle until he is ready to ask for help. When he finally admits he cannot do it all, Ava gives him a binder full of substitute teachers he can call. It is a small moment, but it shows how much both characters have grown. Gregory learns that being a good leader sometimes means admitting he needs help. Ava learns that she can use her skills to help someone else succeed instead of just making her own life easier.
The promotion also changes the power dynamic between Gregory and Ava. In the first season, Ava flirted with Gregory in ways that were inappropriate and built on her power over him. Now they are on the same side of the administration, and the show is exploring what that means for both of them.
A New Teacher Walks In and Takes Melissa’s Room
The season premiere, titled “Jungle Classroom,” introduced a new face to Abbott: Elsa Hardaway, played by Katy Mixon. Elsa arrives as part of the fallout from the school closures. Abbott absorbed students from other schools, and new teachers came with them. Elsa is one of them.
She makes an immediate impression. Elsa wears a pink tracksuit, walks into the teachers’ lounge like she owns the place, and ends up taking Melissa Schemmenti’s classroom on the first floor. Melissa is not happy about it. Her ankles are not happy about it either. But Elsa does not back down. She matches Melissa step for step, and the two of them are set up as rivals for the rest of the season.
“You’re not aware of the hierarchy around here, but,” Melissa says in the trailer, and Elsa’s response makes it clear she is not going anywhere.
Melissa is also dealing with a new role of her own. She is now a teachers’ union representative, which gives her more power at Abbott but also more responsibility. The combination of her union position and her rivalry with Elsa is one of the season’s most entertaining threads.
Janine and Gregory: A Proposal That Did Not Go as Planned
Janine Teagues (played by Quinta Brunson) and Gregory Eddie are together at the start of season 6. They are living together, and Gregory is planning to propose. The only problem is that Gregory is terrible at keeping secrets.
In episode 4, titled “Halloween Party,” Gregory goes to a jewelry store to buy a ring. He tells only one person, O’Shon, about his plan. But Janine tracks Gregory’s phone location and sees that he has been sitting in the same strip mall for hours. She starts to suspect the worst. When she calls him, a chaotic jewelry store saleswoman can be heard in the background talking about rings in a way that sounds, to Janine, like Gregory is with another woman.
Gregory clears things up at Ava’s Halloween party and asks Janine to trust him and be patient. Janine agrees, but she thinks the surprise is a puppy. Then Ava accidentally ruins everything. Ava sees Janine dancing and assumes Janine already knows about the proposal. Ava congratulates her, and the secret is out.
“Janine deserves to feel the shock, surprise, and ecstasy of a genuine proposal,” one critic wrote, “emotions the Halloween episode forecloses by letting her learn the truth through a third party.”
The proposal has not happened yet. The surprise has. And the show is now in a position where Janine knows about the ring, Gregory does not know that she knows, and Ava is the one who let the secret slip.
Courtney’s Story: A Student Who Needs More Than a Lesson Plan
The title of episode 5 is not about a teacher. It is about a student. Courtney (played by Lela Hoffmeister) is a former student of Janine’s. Earlier in the season, Janine noticed that Courtney was staying late at school, skipping classes, and acting out. Janine and Ava both realized that Courtney needed help.
The reason is that Courtney’s parents are going through a divorce. She is struggling to cope, and she does not want to talk about it. In “Courtney,” Janine spends time with her, trying to give her a safe space. Janine brings in the school counselor, but she does it without warning Courtney first, which backfires. Courtney does not want to be pushed into talking about her feelings.
“I do love Janine being so determined to help give her a safe space to be comfortable,” one viewer wrote, “and hopefully with time Courtney will be able to open up about what all’s going on.”
The storyline matters because it shows a different side of Janine. She is not just trying to fix a broken system anymore. She is trying to help one student, and she is learning that helping someone means letting them set the pace.
A Milestone Episode at Disneyland
Season 6 will include the show’s 100th episode, and it is set at Disneyland. The episode is titled “One Hundred,” and it will air in December as the midseason finale.
“Abbott Elementary is going all out for a major milestone,” one report noted. “Season 6 will feature an episode set at Disneyland, marking the sitcom’s 100th episode and serving as the season finale.”
The episode is part of an ABC tradition of filming milestone episodes at Disney parks. The Abbott cast and crew filmed at Disneyland in October 2026. For a show that has spent five seasons in a building with a broken furnace and outdated books, a trip to the happiest place on earth is a well-earned reward for both the characters and the audience.
What Else to Know About Season 6
Season 6 is set to have 22 episodes, and new episodes air on Wednesdays at 8:30 PM ET on ABC. Episodes stream the next day on Hulu. The season premiere brought in 6.3 million viewers after seven days of viewing, the show’s best seven-day audience in a year.
Several guest stars are set to appear, including Ali Wong, Miranda Cosgrove, and Edi Patterson. Bill Hader is also set to make an appearance.

Mr. Johnson (played by William Stanford Davis) has a quiet but important moment in “Courtney.” He uses his bonus check to buy uniforms for the step team, and Ava’s quiet “Thank you” in response is one of the season’s sweetest scenes. The show has always given Mr. Johnson small moments of depth, and this season is no different.
Barbara is also facing the idea of retirement. The topic comes up in “Courtney,” and it catches viewers by surprise. Barbara is not ready to retire, and her passion for her students is part of what makes the grading scandal so personal for her.
