Why Rakul Preet Singh Chose to Play Surpanakha

The role of Surpanakha is often remembered for one single event in the Ramayana: the moment her nose is cut off, which triggers the chain of events leading to the war between Rama and Ravana. Rakul Preet Singh has spoken about why she found the character compelling.

In earlier interviews, she described Surpanakha as a “misunderstood and layered character.” She said:

“She was the reason why the war took place in the first place. So it has been really interesting to play someone with multiple shades.”

Rakul also replied to an open letter from a fan on X, explaining that the complexity of the character was exactly what made her say yes to the role. She wrote:

“History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story. As an actor, roles that challenge perception are the most exciting.”
