9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 4, titled “Imposter Syndrome,” arrived on Thursday, November 5, 2026, on ABC, and it delivered one of the season’s most personal and painful hours yet. After the explosive volcano arc that dominated the first three episodes, the show pulled back on spectacle and put its characters under a quieter but no less brutal microscope.

The episode focused on three separate stories that all circled the same theme: people who feel like frauds in their own lives. Buck (Oliver Stark) is drowning in doubt about whether he can ever be a real father to Theo. Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is questioning whether she still belongs at the dispatch center. And a man who believes he is a doctor nearly kills people because he cannot accept what he truly is.

Buck and Eddie’s Cold War Turns the 118 into a Betting Pool

The hour opened with Buck and Eddie (Ryan Guzman) still not speaking to each other after their explosive argument about Theo in the previous episode. Their awkwardness was so thick that Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) literally started taking bets on how long the silent treatment would last.

The tension played out in a painfully funny coffee scene at the station. Buck and Eddie exchanged stiff, clipped small talk about coffee refills while Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) and Harry (Elijah M. Cooper) watched like it was a tennis match. The cutting remarks continued in the engine between calls, with Eddie telling Buck that a life with “no responsibility, never accountable for anyone but yourself” sounded “right up your alley”. Buck fired back that Eddie seemed like a “miserable person” who only knew how to follow rules.

Oliver Stark told TVLine in October that the conflict was “going to last longer than I expected it to,” and he was right โ€” until Buck’s world imploded later in the episode.

A Trip to the Park Ends with Buck in Handcuffs

The most devastating sequence of the night came at a playground. Theo did not want to leave, and when Buck carried the screaming four-year-old to his car, concerned parents called 9-1-1. The situation went from bad to worse when police arrived and Theo told them flatly that Buck was not his father.

Buck was arrested on a false kidnapping accusation and taken to a police station in handcuffs. Everything was eventually cleared up, but the damage was done. The arrest forced Buck to confront a truth he had been avoiding since he agreed to foster Theo: the boy does not see him as a parent. To Theo, Buck is still a stranger who took him away from the life he knew.

The final blow came when Buck noticed Theo reenacting the fatal car crash that killed his parents using toy cars. When Buck tried to add a toy firetruck to the scene, Theo became visibly unhappy. The moment landed with brutal clarity. Buck realized he cannot fix Theo’s grief by simply being present. The boy needs more than Buck knows how to give.

Buck and Eddie Make Up โ€” and Buck Makes a Heartbreaking Call

After the arrest, Buck and Eddie finally ended their cold war. Buck apologized for lashing out. Eddie admitted he had overstepped. And Buck conceded that his friend had been right all along. The reconciliation came faster than expected, but the conversation that followed was the episode’s real gut punch.

Buck told Eddie he does not think he can be Theo’s father.

The admission was not treated as a final answer or a dramatic cliffhanger. It was a quiet, painful confession from a man who has spent the entire season trying to prove he can handle something he was never prepared for. Oliver Stark has been vocal about Theo’s behavior being understandable given the trauma the child has endured. In a TV Insider interview, Stark said Theo “is a handful. I think justifiably so”.

The episode did not show Buck taking any official steps to remove Theo from his home. The decision remains a raw emotional low point, not a legal resolution.

The Good Samaritan Who Was Not a Doctor

The 118’s emergency of the week involved a multi-vehicle crash on the highway. When firefighters arrived, a bystander had already been tending to the injured and claimed to be a doctor. Maddie, back at her dispatch desk after the lava crisis, treated his reports as coming from a medical professional.

The man’s help made several injuries worse. Athena (Angela Bassett) initially considered whether the man might have relapsed into some kind of substance abuse, but Hen noticed that his hands were shaking and raised the possibility of a neurological disorder. The truth turned out to be even stranger: the man comes from a family of doctors and suffers from a condition that causes memory gaps and false memories. He genuinely believed he was a doctor because his brain told him so.

The fake doctor’s story became a full-blown emergency when he showed up at May’s (Corinne Massiah) hospital and pressured her to assist in an unnecessary appendectomy. May initially felt excited about the chance to help in surgery, but she noticed his hands trembling and realized he did not even know what a scalpel was called. She sedated him before he could operate, and Athena arrived to find that May had already saved the day.

Maddie’s Confidence Takes a Direct Hit

The fake doctor’s phone call with Maddie became the source of her own crisis. The man had sounded sure and confident while supposedly helping crash victims, but there were details that should have tipped her off. He told Maddie he did not have his medical kit, yet he reported a blood pressure reading for one of the victims. A person can check a pulse with their fingers, but they cannot measure blood pressure without equipment.

Maddie began to wonder if she had lost her edge. She questioned whether she still belonged at the dispatch center after everything she had been through. The episode did not resolve her doubts, but it made clear that her instincts are still sharp โ€” she just does not trust them the way she used to.

What “Imposter Syndrome” Means for the Show

Every storyline in Episode 4 tied back to the title. Buck feels like a fake father. Maddie feels like a fake dispatcher. The good Samaritan genuinely believes he is a doctor because his mind has constructed a false reality. Even Eddie, for all his certainty about how Buck should handle Theo, admitted he overstepped his role as a friend.

The episode did not offer easy answers. It ended with Buck sitting in his doubt, Maddie sitting in hers, and Theo still caught between a past he cannot escape and a present he does not understand. 9-1-1 returns with Episode 5, “Who’s Your Daddy?,” on Thursday, November 12, 2026, on ABC.
