Natalia Dyer and Elijah Wood have officially signed on to lead the sequel to the 2007 supernatural horror film 1408, nearly two decades after the original became a cult favorite. Dyer, best known for her role as Nancy Wheeler in Netflix’s Stranger Things, will take the starring role, while Wood, famous for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, will play a supporting part. Original stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are in negotiations to return in secondary roles, and director Mikael Hรฅfstrรถm is coming back to helm the follow-up.

The New Cast Members and Their Roles

Natalia Dyer steps into the lead position for the sequel. The 29-year-old actress wrapped up her run on Stranger Things after five seasons and is currently working on HBO’s true-crime limited series The Trial of Louise Woodward. She also has the romantic comedy Goodbye Girl lined up.

Elijah Wood joins in a supporting capacity. Wood has become a familiar face in horror over the past few years, with roles in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, The Toxic Avenger, and Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey. He is also set to return as Frodo Baggins in Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum and will appear in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Gentlemen.

“I was lucky that I never had the desire, or no one asked me to do any sequels. There’s one that I think would be interesting to do, which would be ‘1408.’ Just because โ€ฆ I think today, you know, most movies suck.” โ€” John Cusack, speaking to People in 2025 about his willingness to revisit the film

John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson Return in Smaller Parts

John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are both in talks to reprise their roles from the original film, but they will serve as secondary characters this time around. Cusack played Mike Enslin, a writer who checks into the haunted Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City to debunk its reputation, only to face genuine supernatural terror. Jackson played Gerald Olin, the hotel manager who warns him against entering the room.

The fact that Cusack’s character is returning suggests the sequel will treat the original theatrical ending โ€” where Enslin survives โ€” as canon. The 2007 film famously had multiple alternate endings, but Hรฅfstrรถm has always maintained the theatrical version was the intended one.

Production Details and Release Timeline

Filming for the 1408 sequel is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. No release date has been announced yet.

The project is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Richard Saperstein of Bluestone Entertainment, Spyglass Media Group, and Frank Mayor. Bluestone Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment are co-financing the film. FilmNation will handle international distribution rights and co-represent domestic rights with WME Independent. The sequel will be presented to buyers at the American Film Market (AFM).

What the Original 1408 Was About

Released in 2007 by MGM, 1408 was based on a 1999 short story by Stephen King. The film followed Mike Enslin (Cusack), an author who writes about haunted locations. He checks into Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, ignoring warnings from manager Gerald Olin (Jackson) about the room’s violent history. What follows is a psychological and supernatural nightmare that traps him inside.

The film was a commercial success, earning $132 million worldwide against a modest $25 million budget. It became a cult favorite and is often cited as one of the better Stephen King adaptations.

Why a Sequel Is Happening Now

Talk of a sequel first surfaced in October 2026, when reports said a follow-up was in early development. The project gained real momentum when Cusack publicly expressed interest. In a 2025 interview with People, Cusack said 1408 was the only film from his career he would ever consider revisiting. “There’s one that I think would be interesting to do, which would be ‘1408,’” he said at the time.

Stephen King never wrote a sequel to the original short story, so the film’s story will be entirely new material. Hรฅfstrรถm co-wrote the script with Mark Verheiden, whose previous credits include Timecop and Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Fan Reactions: Excitement and Skepticism

Online discussion around the sequel has been mixed. Some fans are eager to see the haunted room return to the screen, while others feel the original film was self-contained and does not need a follow-up.

One widely shared fan comment summed up the skeptical side: “Please don’t make a sequel. This is already a nearly perfect horror film”. Another reaction noted that Hollywood has been mining old properties for years, with one fan writing that “even this is getting a sequel”.

What We Know About the Story (So Far)

Plot details for the 1408 sequel are being kept under wraps. What is clear is that the new film will shift focus to Dyer’s lead character, with Cusack and Jackson serving as supporting players. This suggests a new protagonist will enter the world of the haunted room, rather than a direct continuation of Enslin’s story.

The sequel has no official title yet. It is also unclear whether the film will follow the same anthology-style approach as the original short story or build a new narrative around the Dolphin Hotel.

The Original Film’s Streaming Availability

For viewers who want to revisit the 2007 film before the sequel arrives, 1408 is available to rent on Prime Video for $3.99. It can also be streamed on Fubo TV. Availability may vary by region, so checking local listings is recommended for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India.
