Priyanka Chopra Jonas has confirmed that a sequel to her 2016 Marathi film Ventilator is officially in the works. The announcement arrives as her production house, Purple Pebble Pictures, completes 10 years of operation. Titled Ventilator 2, the film will bring back writer-director Rajesh Mapuskar and is scheduled for a 2027 release. Cast details and story information have not been shared yet.
The Instagram Announcement and Priyanka’s Message
Priyanka shared the news on Instagram on Saturday, November 7, 2026. In her post, she looked back at why she started her production banner and what Ventilator meant to that journey.
“10 years ago, with @purplepebblepictures, I decided I want to tell stories that mean something. Ventilator was one of those very important stories to us at the company. A decade later, we’re coming back to it, with so much more…” — Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Instagram post
The post coincided with the 10th anniversary of Purple Pebble Pictures, the banner Priyanka launched in 2016. The house backed the original Ventilator as its first Marathi production.
Rajesh Mapuskar Returns as Writer and Director
Rajesh Mapuskar directed the 2016 original and will write and direct the sequel as well. The reunion brings back the filmmaker who earned the National Film Award for Best Director for Ventilator.
Ventilator 2 will be produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Dr Madhu Chopra, and Rajesh Mapuskar under the banners of Purple Pebble Pictures and Magij Pictures. The production combines Priyanka’s banner with Mapuskar’s own production house.
What the Original Ventilator Was About
Released in 2016, Ventilator followed the Kamerkar family, a large Marathi household that gathers at a Mumbai hospital after its eldest member, Gajanan, is placed on a ventilator just before Ganesh Chaturthi. The medical crisis forces estranged relatives to spend time together, exposing old disagreements, generational gaps, and unresolved tensions. The film mixed humour with emotional moments while dealing with mortality and family bonds.
The ensemble cast included Ashutosh Gowariker, Jitendra Joshi, Sulbha Arya, Sukanya Kulkarni, Viju Khote, Satish Alekar, and Achyut Potdar, among others. Priyanka Chopra Jonas made a special appearance as herself.
The Awards That Made Ventilator a Landmark Project
Ventilator won three National Film Awards at the 64th National Film Awards in 2017:
- Best Director — Rajesh Mapuskar
- Best Editing
- Best Sound Mixing
The film became an important step in Priyanka’s shift from an internationally known actress to a producer backing regional stories. In a past interview with Scroll, she explained why she chose to make the film in Marathi despite advice to keep it in Hindi.
“Many people found it to be a great script but were sceptical about producing the film. A few people tried to discourage me from making it in Marathi because my first film, Ferrari Ki Sawaari was in Hindi, and they thought my market would go down if I moved to Marathi. I was sure I did not want to make it in Hindi. It makes economic sense to make the film in Marathi, where better scripts are accepted and projects are wrapped up in record time.” — Priyanka Chopra Jonas, to Scroll
