NewJeans faces serious security concerns after an unknown individual threatens to expose their dorm location; HYBE vows strong protective measures

On August 20, 2024, the popular South Korean girl group NewJeans faced a severe security threat when an anonymous online user, referred to as “A,” posted alarming messages on an online community, threatening to reveal the location of the group’s dormitory. This incident has sparked widespread concern among fans and the general public, leading to swift action from NewJeans’ agency, HYBE.

Threatening Messages and Immediate Concerns

The issue came to light when Sports World, a South Korean media outlet, reported that a NewJeans fan had discovered the threatening posts. The anonymous user, known as “A,” posted a cryptic message, “XX NewJeans,” which quickly gained attention and caused unease within the online community. Although the post was eventually deleted, the potential threat had already raised alarms.

What further escalated the situation was “A’s” attempt to reveal NewJeans’ dorm location during a live broadcast. The user indirectly hinted at the location, which heightened the concerns for the safety of the group members.

HYBE’s Response and Legal Actions

Fans of NewJeans were quick to act, submitting their concerns to the relevant authorities. HYBE swiftly responded to the situation, confirming that they had reported the threatening post to the police. The agency assured fans and the public that they are doing everything in their power to protect the group’s safety.

HYBE stated:

“After confirming the content of the threatening post, we have reported it to the police and are doing our best to protect our artists.”

This is not the first time that NewJeans has been targeted with threats. In June 2024, the group faced threats of a knife attack, which was also reported to the police.

Legal Implications and Ongoing Threats in the Industry

In South Korea, issuing threats, even without carrying them out, is considered a criminal offense if the target is openly specified. Such actions can lead to severe legal consequences, including:

  • Up to 3 years in prison and a fine of approximately 5 million KRW (around $3,800 USD).
  • In cases of aggravated threats, the penalties increase to up to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to 10 million KRW (around $7,600 USD).

The incident with NewJeans is a stark reminder of the ongoing threats faced by K-pop stars and actors. Over the years, such threats have become increasingly common, causing significant concern within the industry and among fans.

NewJeans: A Rising Force in K-pop

Despite the security threats, NewJeans continues to solidify their place as one of the most iconic fourth-generation K-pop girl groups. Known for their unique concept and style, the group has made waves globally since their debut.

NewJeans consists of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. Recently, the group marked their Japanese debut with the release of the single album Supernatural on June 21, 2024.
