Marvel’s Thunderbolts Trailer OUT: Hints at Avengers Tower's New Owner and Revisits Tony Stark’s Iconic Skyscraper

The new special look at Marvel’s upcoming Thunderbolts movie has reignited speculation about one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) long-standing mysteries: the identity of Avengers Tower’s current owner. Revealed during Marvel Studios’ panel at D23 Brazil, the footage showcases CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in a luxurious bar atop a New York skyscraper, a familiar setting for longtime fans. With its recognizable aesthetic and striking view, the space strongly resembles Avengers Tower, previously known as Stark Tower, raising questions about the building’s role in the MCU.

Has Avengers Tower Found a New Purpose in Thunderbolts?

In the new trailer, Valentina invites the Thunderbolts team to what appears to be Avengers Tower. The luxurious top-floor bar mirrors scenes from previous MCU films, including 2012’s The Avengers where Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) famously faced off with Loki. This visual link suggests the space has been refashioned as a new headquarters for Valentina’s team of antiheroes, the Thunderbolts.

The tower has been absent from the screen since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) oversaw the move of various Avengers memorabilia out of the building after Tony Stark sold it to an undisclosed buyer. Since then, MCU fans have debated who might have taken control of the iconic skyscraper, speculating about potential buyers like Norman Osbourne, Reed Richards, Wilson Fisk, or Victor Von Doom. Though the new trailer does not confirm the tower’s new owner, the setting and dialogue give clues that Avengers Tower has indeed been repurposed as a base for the Thunderbolts.

As Valentina raises a glass, she reflects on the tower’s historic role in the MCU: “How crazy is it to think of all the monumental fights that happened exactly here where you’re standing?” She adds, “I mean, the place wasn’t cheap, but it’s got good optics.” This statement suggests not only the importance of the location but also hints that it has been acquired at a significant cost, supporting fan theories that Avengers Tower has transitioned to new hands within the Marvel universe.

Thunderbolts Team Dynamics and a New Look at Bucky Barnes

The trailer introduces key members of the Thunderbolts team, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in a mix of action-packed sequences. This lineup of super-soldiers and spies brings together contrasting personalities and skill sets, as highlighted when Yelena humorously points out the team’s similarity: “So what, we all just punch and shoot?”

In one intense scene, the Thunderbolts find themselves ambushed by a convoy on a deserted road, struggling to defend themselves from a well-armed militant group. Just as the situation appears dire, an unseen ally strikes from behind, decimating the opposition. To the team’s surprise, this figure turns out to be Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier. Bucky’s entrance, complete with a motorcycle chase and shotgun in hand, delivers a thrilling Terminator 2–style moment as he takes down the convoy’s final vehicle.

However, the relief is short-lived. Following the battle, Bucky targets the Thunderbolts, launching an explosive disk at their vehicle—a tactic reminiscent of his earlier methods in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This surprise turn raises concerns about Bucky’s true intentions. Fans are left wondering whether Bucky is willingly working against his teammates or if he has fallen under the control of another force. Given Bucky’s long struggle to break free from Hydra’s influence, this development could signify a darker turn for the Winter Soldier, hinting at potential tension within the Thunderbolts’ ranks.

The Future of Avengers Tower and Bucky’s Role in the Thunderbolts

The implications of these scenes are twofold. First, the appearance of Avengers Tower as a possible base for the Thunderbolts suggests Marvel is intentionally reintroducing this iconic location, potentially aligning it with the MCU’s broader storyline involving antiheroes and morally ambiguous characters. Secondly, the dynamics within the Thunderbolts team seem complex, with Bucky’s unpredictable role foreshadowing possible internal conflicts.

Set for release on May 2, 2025, Thunderbolts promises to be a unique addition to the MCU, exploring the lives of characters who have previously operated in the shadow of traditional heroes. Fans can expect more information as Marvel Studios continues to reveal details in the lead-up to the premiere, including insights into Bucky’s true motives and the implications of Avengers Tower’s new ownership. With this exciting preview, Marvel fans may finally be closer to uncovering the truth about one of the MCU’s most talked-about mysteries.
