Diljit Dosanjh's Chandigarh Concert Faces Legal Trouble Over Song Lyrics

Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming Chandigarh concert, part of his Dil-Luminati India Tour, has encountered legal challenges following similar restrictions in Telangana. The Chandigarh Child Rights Commission has issued an advisory directing the singer to avoid performing songs that reference alcohol or violence.

Restrictions Imposed by Child Rights Commission

The commission specifically highlighted songs such as Patiala Peg, 5 Taara, and Case, noting their potential to negatively influence young audiences. The advisory also prohibits Diljit from altering lyrics to bypass these restrictions, a tactic he reportedly used during performances in Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Shipra Bansal, Chairperson of the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, stated:

“It has come to our notice that children are invited on stage during concerts, and the sound levels are harmful to them. Additionally, concerts often run late into the night, with the possibility of alcohol being served, which should not be allowed for children under 18.”

The advisory raises broader concerns about concerts’ impact on children, such as high noise levels, late-night performances, and the accessibility of alcohol at venues.

Similar Challenges in Telangana

This is not the first time Diljit Dosanjh has faced such restrictions. Ahead of his concert in Hyderabad on November 15, 2024, Telangana authorities imposed limitations due to concerns about the influence of lyrics referencing alcohol. In response, the singer modified words like daaru (alcohol) to coke and theka (liquor store) to hotel.

During his performance in Ahmedabad, Diljit took a strong stance, calling for a nationwide ban on alcohol sales and pledging not to sing songs referencing alcohol or violence if India became a “dry country.”

Broader Implications

The Chandigarh advisory also referenced a similar case involving Punjabi singer Karan Aujla, during which concerns were raised about children being invited on stage and the inappropriateness of certain songs. This reflects a growing scrutiny of concert content and its impact on young audiences in India.

Diljit’s statement in Ahmedabad highlighted what he perceives as contradictions in government policies. He criticized the open sale of alcohol for revenue while restricting song lyrics that reference it, arguing that such restrictions alone may not effectively address societal concerns.

Scheduled Concert Details

Diljit Dosanjh is set to perform in Chandigarh on December 14, 2024, and the event is expected to draw a massive audience. However, the ongoing legal and ethical scrutiny may influence the concert’s format and song selection.
