Actor Cillian Murphy has offered insight into why the transition from the hit series Peaky Blinders to its highly awaited movie adaptation has taken longer than expected. Speaking during a promotional interview with Entertainment Weekly for his upcoming film Small Things Like These, Murphy revealed the challenges involved in creating a cinematic story while respecting the series’ acclaimed conclusion.

Respecting the Series Finale

Murphy shared that the ending of Peaky Blinders had a sense of closure, which made him hesitant to revisit the universe without a strong purpose. Reflecting on the series finale, he remarked,

“I thought it was an excellent kind of ambiguous but clever ending.”

However, Murphy acknowledged that the Peaky Blinders universe had more stories left to tell, which motivated the team to work on the movie. The challenge, he explained, lay in developing a narrative that felt cinematic rather than episodic.

“It took us a lot of time to figure out the story for the movie and how to tell it cinematically and not episodically,” Murphy said. “I think we’ve managed to do it, and we’ve got a killer script, so I’m really excited to do it now.”

Balancing Fan Expectations

Murphy emphasized the importance of meeting audience expectations without compromising the quality of the story. He expressed that creating a film just for the sake of extending the franchise would not have satisfied him or the fans.

“You can’t just make the film for the sake of making the film. I really want to make a film that satisfies the fans,” he explained. “It has to take it up another notch. And I think this one will.”

The actor also mentioned that despite being asked about Peaky Blinders frequently during his Oppenheimer press events, he avoided rushing into the project, wanting to ensure it would live up to the high standards set by the series.

Transition from Series to Film

The final season of Peaky Blinders, filmed during the pandemic, marked an emotional conclusion for fans. While reflecting on the challenges posed by the pandemic, Murphy shared that external circumstances did not influence his creative decisions. He remains committed to choosing projects that resonate with him personally.

Murphy’s Other Endeavors

In addition to his involvement in the Peaky Blinders movie, Murphy is currently promoting his new film Small Things Like These, where he also serves as a producer under his newly established production company, Big Things Films. The film, available on Amazon Prime, follows the story of Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and father of five, who decides to intervene in an abusive situation at his workplace.

Murphy’s portrayal of Furlong highlights his ability to explore complex and nuanced characters, adding to his repertoire of memorable performances.

Future of Peaky Blinders

While the Peaky Blinders movie remains untitled and without a confirmed release date, Murphy’s updates indicate significant progress has been made. Fans can expect the film to retain the dark, intense atmosphere of the original series while offering a fresh, cinematic perspective on the characters and storylines.
