Elon Musk has resurfaced one of his most talked-about political posts from 2022, reminding followers of a warning he made when he first turned his back on the Democratic Party. The repost landed just days before the 2026 US midterm elections, a contest in which the billionaire has already spent nearly half a billion dollars to support Republican candidates.
The post first appeared on May 18, 2022, when Musk wrote that he had voted for Democrats in the past but could no longer support the party. He ended that message with a line that has now come full circle: โNow, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold,โ followed by a popcorn emoji. On October 30, 2026, Musk quote-posted that same message on X with a short caption that read, โFour years ago โฆ And that is exactly what happened.โ The post crossed 7 million views in about a day.
A separate report from Soap Central says Musk reshared the tweet on Saturday with the caption โAs predicted.โ The same outlet notes that Musk highlighted his earlier warning as criticism from Democrats intensified. The exact wording of the caption varies between reports, but the core message remains the same: Musk is telling his audience that the pushback he predicted in 2022 has arrived.
What Musk Said in the Original 2022 Post
The May 2022 message was the first time Musk publicly announced his break from the Democratic Party. โIn the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party,โ he wrote. โBut they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.โ
That post did not appear in a vacuum. Just days earlier, Musk had been going back and forth with former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau over Muskโs growing support for Republican causes. Favreau accused Musk of backing โelectric vehicle-hating climate deniers,โ and Musk shot back that the Biden administration had tried to sideline Tesla, even though the company made twice as many electric vehicles as the rest of the US industry combined.
The 2022 post also carried a personal edge. Musk said the Democratic Party had changed, and he framed his switch as a response to what he saw as a party that had moved too far to the left. That framing became the foundation for his later political identity as a leading voice on the right.
Why Musk Says He Left the Democrats
Muskโs move away from the Democratic Party was not a single moment. It was a gradual shift that stretched over several years. He once described himself as a โhalf Democrat, half Republicanโ and said he had โstrongly supported Obama for Presidentโ in 2007. He voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020, according to his own public statements.
The turning point came in 2022. Musk said the Democratic Party had become โthe party of division & hateโ and confirmed he would vote Republican. In a Texas special election that year, he cast his ballot for a Republican candidate for the first time.
Another factor that Musk has cited is the gender transition of his daughter, Vivian. According to a report from ThinkChina, Muskโs political pivot was โcatalysed by the gender transition of his transgender daughter,โ which turned him against what he calls Democratic โwokeโ culture. Musk has also said the Biden administrationโs treatment of Tesla pushed him further away. The 2022 exchange with Favreau shows that the business side of politics was already on his mind when he made the switch.
The $445 Million Man of the 2026 Midterms
Muskโs 2022 warning about a โdirty tricks campaignโ has a very different weight in 2026. Federal Election Commission data shows that Musk has put at least $445.77 million into Republican-aligned political action committees and groups since last year. That figure, as of October 29, is well above the roughly $290 million he spent backing Donald Trump and Republicans in 2024. About $200 million of the total came in the final two months of campaigning alone.
The biggest single share, $216 million, went to his own America PAC, a political action committee that has targeted 43 House and Senate races. The group has used television ads, digital campaigns, phone messages, and mail materials to reach voters. Texas has drawn the most money. Musk has poured well over $200 million into the Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, including $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. That race is now the most expensive of the midterms.
Talarico has turned that spending into a campaign issue. โThis Senate seat doesnโt belong to Elon Musk,โ he told supporters at a rally earlier this week. The spending marks a sharp turnaround from May 2025, when Musk said, โI think Iโve done enoughโ on political donations after public backlash over his role in the early months of Trumpโs second term. At the time, Musk had indicated he would cut back on political spending and focus on his businesses. The 2026 cycle shows that plan did not last.
Democrats Are Preparing to Investigate Musk
Muskโs repost came shortly after a Politico report that said Democratic lawmakers are already lining up to probe the billionaire if they win control of the House in the November midterms. The report, published on October 20, said Democrats have โmany targetsโ aimed at Musk, with the prime focus being his brief stint leading the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during the early days of Trumpโs second term.
โWhat happens when one guy gets a giant contract from the government and then uses it to do something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine?โ Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) told Politico. โThereโs a lot of different parts of the corruption around Musk.โ
A spokesperson for Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) said they have โa lot of questionsโ about Musk and DOGE that they โplan to investigate.โ Garcia is the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, and Jayapal sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Politico reported that multiple committees are โgaming outโ how they will go after Musk, with senior lawmakers and aides debating what alleged misdeeds they can investigate. Beyond DOGE, the report said, โHuge parts of Muskโs dealings with the federal government could come under congressional scrutiny,โ including the billions of dollars worth of contracts SpaceX has with NASA.
Musk Fires Back at Democrats
Musk did not wait for the midterms to respond. On October 21, he posted a direct threat to Democrats who are preparing to investigate him. โLive by the sword, die by the sword,โ Musk wrote on X, responding to the Politico report. โThose who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets.โ
The AFP described Musk as โPresident Donald Trumpโs multi-billionaire allyโ and noted that he is the United Statesโ first trillionaire. The report also pointed out that Musk is a top financial contributor to the Republican Party, a frequent advisor to the president, and a major recipient of government contracts through SpaceX. After helping to bankroll Trumpโs return to power in 2024, Musk ran a controversial project to slash US government spending and push nearly 300,000 employees out of work.
Republicans currently control both the Senate and the House. Forecasts suggest Democrats are likely to win the lower chamber at least on November 3. That outcome would put Democrats in charge of powerful investigative committees with the power to compel testimony, making Musk a prime target. โThe sheer number of conflicts of interest are astounding,โ influential Democrat Zoe Lofgren was quoted as saying in Politicoโs report.
Muskโs Three Fears About a Democratic Sweep
Ahead of the midterms, Musk also outlined what he called his โbiggest concernโ about a potential Democratic โclean sweepโ in 2028. In a post on X, he warned that if Democrats gain unified control of the House, Senate, and Presidency in 2028, they would take three steps to cement political power:
- Make Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico states to gain a strong majority in the Senate.
- Open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority.
- Increase the size of the Supreme Court to gain an immediate majority.
Musk said these moves would result in America becoming a โpermanent one-party stateโ and โthe end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word.โ He then urged voters to support Republican Senate candidates: โAll that is needed to ensure this doesnโt happen is 51 Republican senators in 2029. That is why you should vote for Republican senators this election. Other reasons are irrelevant compared to this one.โ
The โAs Predictedโ Caption and What It Means
The two captions reported by different outlets tell slightly different stories. Times of India says Musk wrote โFour years ago โฆ And that is exactly what happened,โ which frames the repost as a look back at a prediction that came true. Soap Central says Musk wrote โAs predicted,โ a shorter phrase that carries the same message but with a sharper, more immediate tone.
Either way, the repost serves a clear purpose. Musk is telling his followers that the Democratic Partyโs response to his political shift is exactly what he said it would be in 2022. The Politico report about planned investigations gives him a concrete example to point to. The $445 million he has spent in the 2026 cycle gives him a reason to keep the spotlight on the fight.
The 2022 thread also had a business angle that still matters in 2026. When Favreau accused Musk of backing โelectric vehicle-hating climate deniers,โ Musk defended Teslaโs record and blamed the Biden administration for trying to sideline the company. That argument has not gone away. SpaceXโs government contracts and Teslaโs place in the electric vehicle market are both part of the landscape that Democrats say they want to examine.

A Four-Year-Old Post With New Weight
The May 2022 post was written by a businessman explaining why he was changing his vote. The October 2026 repost is written by the largest single-cycle political donor in modern US history, according to FEC data. Musk has put more money into the 2026 midterms than he did into the 2024 presidential race, and he has done it while Democrats are openly preparing to investigate his companies and his role in government.
The popcorn emoji from 2022 now sits next to a much larger political operation. Muskโs America PAC has spread across 43 congressional races. His spending in Texas has made one Senate contest the most expensive of the cycle. And his response to the Politico report shows that he is not waiting for the election results to fight back.
The repost has crossed 7 million views in about a day, a sign that Muskโs audience is still paying close attention to the 2022 message. The difference is that the โdirty tricks campaignโ he warned about is no longer a prediction. It is a live political fight, with congressional committees, hundreds of millions of dollars, and a midterm election all in the frame.
