The second season of Peacemaker concluded on October 9, 2025, and according to creator James Gunn, it marks the end of the television show for now. While there are no current plans for a third season, the story of John Cena’s Christopher Smith is far from over and will continue elsewhere in the expanding DC Universe.
The Official Word on Season 3
James Gunn has been clear about the future of the series. In recent interviews and podcasts, he stated that there are no active plans for Peacemaker Season 3. He explained that the storyline is shifting to focus on the wider DCU.
โNo, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now,โ Gunn told Deadline. โThat doesnโt mean that there wonโt be. I donโt want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU.โ
On the official Peacemaker podcast, he added, โPeacemaker will be back. As this TV show? Weโll see exactly what form. We have plans, but youโll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long.โ
How Season 2 Set Up the Future
The season 2 finale, titled “Full Nelson,” ended with a major cliffhanger that directly sets up future DCU projects. After a moment of personal victory where Chris Smith seems to have found peace with his friends and started a relationship with Emilia Harcourt, he is abruptly kidnapped by A.R.G.U.S. director Rick Flag Sr.
In an act of revenge for Peacemaker killing his son in The Suicide Squad, Flag Sr. throws Chris through an interdimensional portal. He is left stranded on a distant planet called Salvation, which Flag intends to use as a prison for metahumans. The finale shows Chris alone on the planet, hearing ominous, unseen creatures around him.
Simultaneously, the rest of his teamโAdebayo, Harcourt, Vigilante, Economos, and new alliesโhave left A.R.G.U.S. to form their own independent agency. Using Vigilante’s stockpiled “blood money,” they establish an organization called Checkmate, with the goal of making the world a better place outside of government control.
Where Peacemaker Will Appear Next
James Gunn has confirmed that the cliffhanger with Peacemaker on Salvation will be resolved in upcoming DCU movies and shows. The planet Salvation and the Checkmate agency are foundational elements for the next chapter of Gunn’s DC Universe.
The most direct follow-up is expected to be the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, where Superman and Lex Luthor are set to team up. Gunn has stated that Salvation is “incredibly important” to that film’s story. It is highly likely that John Cena’s Peacemaker will appear, potentially as a key character in that story.
Before Man of Tomorrow, other DCU projects are scheduled, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026 and the Lanterns series. It remains possible that elements of the Checkmate storyline or other characters from the show could appear in these earlier projects.
Gunn has emphasized his commitment to the character, stating, โHeโs really important to me. Peacemaker is an important characterโฆ I said from the beginningโฆ it’s about creating diamond properties out of the smaller characters like Peacemaker.โ
What This Means for the 11th Street Kids
While the Peacemaker TV series is on hold, the characters fans love will continue. The formation of Checkmate at the end of season 2 provides a clear pathway for the rest of the team to return. Gunn has confirmed that Checkmate will be a recurring element in the DCU.
โYouโll definitely see Checkmate carrying through,โ Gunn said. โTheyโre a thing now. Theyโre a part of whatโs going to happen. And I think theyโre going to be really, really good at what they do.โ
This means characters like Leota Adebayo, Vigilante, Emilia Harcourt, and John Economos could return in a potential Checkmate series or other DCU productions, continuing their mission without Peacemaker initially by their side.
The story of Christopher Smith is taking a dramatic turn, and fans will soon see him fight for survival on a new frontier in the DC Universe.
