Fans of Netflix’s action-packed series Last Samurai Standing are left wondering about the show’s future after its first season ended on a major cliffhanger. The show, which debuted on November 13, 2025, follows samurai competing in a deadly race for a massive cash prize. While the story is clearly not over, Netflix has not yet made a decision about a second season.
The Current Status of Season 2
As of now, Netflix has not officially confirmed the renewal of Last Samurai Standing for a second season. The streaming service typically waits to see how a show performs with audiences before giving it a greenlight. The first season was released in mid-November 2025, and Netflix is likely still reviewing the viewership numbers and global audience reaction.
The show’s creator, Michihito Fujii, has expressed a strong desire to continue the story. In an interview, he confirmed that the narrative is designed to continue and that the team hopes to produce more episodes. He stated:
“If you can watch all the episodes, you’ll see the story still continues. And we do hope to continue.”
The Story Left Unfinished
The first season’s finale left multiple storylines wide open, making a strong case for a continuation. The main competition, the Kodoku, is far from over, with the characters still on their deadly journey from Kyoto to Tokyo.
Key unresolved plots include the shifting loyalties of the strategist Kyojin Tsuge, who was revealed to be working with the villainous samurai hunter Gentosai Okabe. Additionally, the organizer of the deadly game, Toshiyoshi Kawaji, continues his plot to overthrow the Japanese government. With so many threads left hanging, the creators have a clear path for a second season.
When Could Season 2 Be Released?
Although no release date is set, we can make an educated guess based on the production of the first season. Filming for season one began in mid-2024 and the show was released in November 2025.
If Netflix approves a second season in 2026, production could follow a similar timeline. This would point towards a potential release for Last Samurai Standing Season 2 in late 2027.
Who Would Return for Another Season?
If the show is renewed, viewers can expect the main cast to return. This includes:
- Junichi Okada as the protagonist, Shujiro Saga.
- Yumia Fujisaki as Futaba Katsuki, Shujiro’s young companion.
- Kaya Kiyohara as Iroha Kinugasa.
- Masahiro Higashide as Kyojin Tsuge.
The show’s villains, including Gaku Hamada as Toshiyoshi Kawaji and Hiroshi Abe as Gentosai Okabe, would also likely return to continue their pursuit of the main characters.
A Show Designed for a Longer Story
The end of the first season featured a title card that read “End of Chapter One,” signaling that the story is only just beginning. Creator Michihito Fujii has revealed he has a plan for a multi-season arc, ideally wanting two or three seasons to tell the complete story.
The series is based on an ongoing manga, Ikusagami, which provides ample source material for future seasons. The first season covered the initial stages of the deadly race, and a second season would delve deeper into the political conspiracy behind the game and the fates of the main characters.
