Kate Winslet has given the most promising update yet about a second season of the hit HBO drama Mare of Easttown. In a recent interview, she revealed there is a “strong likelihood” that filming for the new season will begin in 2027. This marks a significant shift, as the award-winning show was initially created as a one-season story.
The Path to a Second Season
For years, the future of Mare of Easttown was uncertain. The series premiered in 2021 as a seven-episode limited series and was a major success, earning 16 Emmy nominations and winning four, including awards for Winslet and co-stars Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters. Despite fan demand, the show’s creative team, including star Kate Winslet and creator Brad Ingelsby, consistently said the story was complete.
Winslet explained that the project was originally “done and dusted, finished.” She had previously stated that the only way she would return to play Detective Mare Sheehan again was if “the story was too bloody good to resist”. The intense filming during the COVID-19 pandemic made the team very selective about continuing.
Now, that appears to have changed. Winslet shared that several months ago, while she was editing her directorial debut Goodbye June, new discussions about a second season began among herself, Ingelsby, director Craig Zobel, and HBO executives.
“They were proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible,” Winslet said. “And so I think we probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that.”
The 2027 Filming Target
While talks are serious, fans will need to be patient. Kate Winslet was clear that production is not starting immediately. She indicated that filming “wouldn’t actually be this year” and would most likely happen in 2027.
“I reckon it would end up being 2027 to film it,” she told Deadline. “There’s a strong likelihood it would film sometime in 2027.”
HBO has not made an official announcement about renewing the series. When contacted for comment by other news outlets, the network did not confirm the plans. However, the update from Winslet, who is the show’s star and an executive producer, is the strongest signal yet that the project is moving forward.
This timeline aligns with earlier hints from HBO’s head of drama, Francesca Orsi. In June 2024, Orsi mentioned that the network was having early discussions about a potential new season. She suggested that if the show returned, it would pick up Mare’s story years after the first season’s events, exploring who she has become.
Connections to Brad Ingelsby’s HBO Universe
A new season of Mare of Easttown would join another successful Ingelsby project on HBO. In late 2025, the network premiered Task, a new crime drama also created by Brad Ingelsby and set in the same fictional Delaware County, Pennsylvania, universe. Starring Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent, Task was quickly renewed for a second season in November.
This has led to fan speculation about a potential crossover between the two shows. While nothing is planned, Ingelsby has expressed openness to the idea. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t have a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.” Ruffalo himself has also commented on the possibility, noting, “At some point those two [shows] might run into each other in the future.”
The shared setting and creative team make the concept a natural topic of discussion, though any story connection for Mare of Easttown Season 2 remains under wraps.

Fan Reactions and What’s Next
The update has generated excited reactions from fans who have waited nearly five years for more of Mare Sheehan’s story. On social media, many shared their enthusiasm, with some noting they are willing to wait if it means getting a story that meets the high standard of the first season.
The key hurdle has always been the story. Creator Brad Ingelsby has consistently said he would only pursue a second season if he had a compelling idea that did justice to the characters and the fans. The fact that “proper conversations” are now happening suggests the creative team believes they have found that worthy path forward.
The original series followed Winslet’s Detective Mare Sheehan as she investigated the murder of a young mother in her small Pennsylvania town while grappling with personal trauma and family drama. The powerful performances and intricate plot made it a standout hit.
As of now, no plot details, casting confirmations, or official release window for Mare of Easttown Season 2 have been announced. All attention is on the potential 2027 filming start, with the hope that Kate Winslet will soon return to the streets of Delco.
