Music icons Michael Bublé and Jason Derulo have joined forces to deliver a musical masterpiece, their latest single titled “Spicy Margarita,” which hit the airwaves this Thursday. The collaboration, born out of a desire to fuse distinct musical worlds, promises to be a chart-topping sensation.
The duo, known for their individual success in different genres, recently sat down with ET’s Cassie DiLaura to shed light on the genesis of their unexpected partnership. Derulo humorously recounted the initial pitch for collaboration: “Well, it all started [when] I asked Michael if he would sing a Christmas song with me.” Bublé interjected with a playful denial, leaving Derulo in mock despair. However, this rejection sparked a creative spark, leading to the birth of “Spicy Margarita.”
Derulo explained, “He had a great idea and was like, ‘How about if we did the clash of worlds thing? I don’t know why more people aren’t asking me to bring what I do to a different [musical genre].’” The idea of merging their musical influences and creating something entirely new became the driving force behind their collaboration.
Bublé, expressing admiration for Derulo’s musical prowess, stated, “Really, truthfully, I love him and I loved his music. We’ve been friends for many years.” Recognizing a connection between American jazz standards and Derulo’s pop sound, Bublé envisioned a seamless fusion of these two worlds. He revealed, “I was like, ‘Why is no one taking advantage of this and taking these two worlds and collapsing them together?’”
The collaborative process involved building an interpolation based on sway, turning it into the infectious hit that is “Spicy Margarita.” Bublé commended Derulo’s songwriting skills, stating, “He is a great writer, came up with this idea. I got the idea and I knew in 30 seconds it was gonna be a huge hit.”
With the single released, both artists are eagerly anticipating the music video shoot. Bublé emphasized the joy of sharing their art with the audience, saying, “No matter what any artist says — they say, ‘I don’t care what anybody thinks’ — it feels so good when someone hears something and you see that instant recognition.”
According to Derulo, certain songs, especially the “really, really special ones,” evoke an immediate and enthusiastic response when played for others. “Spicy Margarita” falls into this category, promising a lasting impact on music enthusiasts.
While the single marks a significant moment for both artists, Derulo is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming album, “Nu King,” on February 16. Expressing excitement about the project, he shared, “I’ve been really looking forward to actually releasing this album because it’s been five years since I released my last project.” Derulo’s dedication and passion are evident, making “Nu King” a highly anticipated addition to his musical journey.
