Netflix has given the first look at its upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice. Bestselling author Dolly Alderton wrote the adaptation. Alderton is known for her memoir Everything I Know About Love, which was also turned into a TV series, and her novel Good Material. She described working on Pride and Prejudice as a rare honor.
“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton said in a statement . She called Austen’s novel “the blueprint for romantic comedy” and said adapting it allowed her to find “both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life” .
“The book is a gift to adapt—packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm,” Alderton added. “In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice” .
Euros Lyn, who directed multiple episodes of Heartstopper, brings his experience with heartfelt romantic stories to the project. The series is produced by Lookout Point, a BBC Studios company known for Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack . Corrin also serves as an executive producer, marking their debut in that role .
