The hunt for a missing Navajo girl took a terrifying turn this week on AMCโ€™s Dark Winds. In episode 3, titled โ€œAhรกรกldlรกรกdรญgรญรญ (That Which Has Been Torn Apart),โ€ the assassin got closer than ever to the people of the reservation. Not only did she kill again, but she also came face-to-face with Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) in a move that was both shocking and deeply personal. The episode delivered major twists, setting the stage for the team to leave the safety of the Navajo Nation and head to Los Angeles.

This Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 3 recap breaks down everything you need to know, from the latest deaths to the strange sickness affecting Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and the bizarre kiss that ended the hour.

The Assassin Strikes Again: Two More Are Gone

The episode opened with a grim scene. Albert Gorman , who was shot in the previous episode, stumbled into a hogan belonging to Ashie Begay, Billieโ€™s grandfather. Albert died on the floor moments after warning the old man that the assassin was coming . Ashie Begay, knowing the traditions, began to cut a hole in the north wall of the hogan to release the spirit of the dead. But he ran out of time.

The assassin, Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente) , arrived at the scene. She found Albertโ€™s body and took a photo from his pocketโ€”a picture of his brother, Leroy. When Ashie Begay tried to run, Irene shot him in the back . She later moved his body to a cave and tried to give him a proper Navajo burial, positioning him facing west. This detail confirmed to the police that the killer had some knowledge ofโ€”or a twisted fascination withโ€”Dinรฉ culture .

Back at the station, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) and Leaphorn had to break the news to Billie. The young girl learned that her cousin Albert and her grandfather were both dead. She was now completely alone, with only one family member left: her other cousin, Leroy, who was somewhere in Los Angeles .

Cheeโ€™s Health Gets Worse: Ghost Sickness Takes Hold

While Billie grieved, Jim Chee was struggling with his own problem. After entering the death hogan in the last episode, Chee is clearly suffering from ghost sickness, or “chสผฤฏฬฤฏdii.” The symptoms are getting harder to hide.

At the station, while listening to Billie cry, Cheeโ€™s nose started to bleed heavily . Leaphorn noticed something was wrong earlier in the day and asked Chee to join him for a sweat ceremony to cleanse himself of the spirit. Chee refused, saying he didnโ€™t believe in those things . Leaphorn warned him that ignoring the traditions would only make things worse.

By the end of the episode, Cheeโ€™s condition escalated. After a heated argument with Manuelito, he sat alone in his car and started bleeding from the mouth. A tooth even fell out . The physical pain is taking over his body, but he refuses to ask for help or tell anyone the full truth about how bad it really is.

Chee vs. Manuelito: A Secret Breaks Them Apart

The personal drama between Chee and Manuelito exploded in this episode. The two were caught kissing at the station by another officer, making their secret relationship public . But the romance quickly soured when secrets about work came to light.

Chee told Manuelito that he suspected Leaphorn was going to retire soon. He asked her if she had heard anything. Manuelito, knowing the truth, lied to his face and said no . Later that night, while Chee was keeping watch at her trailer, she finally came clean. She told him that Leaphorn had indeed asked her to take over as lieutenant when he retires, and he had sworn her to secrecy .

Chee was furious. He felt betrayed, not just by Manuelito, but by Leaphorn. He argued that he had stayed by Joeโ€™s side through everything, even when Manuelito left the rez for a Border Patrol job. He believed he deserved to know the truth from Joe himself . The argument ended badly, with Chee storming off to confront Leaphorn directly.

Leaphorn Makes a Disturbing Discovery at Home

While his team was hunting for clues, Leaphorn was busy tracking the assassin. He followed tire tracks from the garage where Irene had bought radiator fluid and discovered a spot in the rocks where she had been hiding, watching the garage with a clear view . He realized she had a perfect shot at him and Chee when they visited, but she didnโ€™t take it.

The tension escalated when the phone rang at the station. It was Irene. She called Leaphorn and warned him to drop the case and leave it to the Feds . She told him she didnโ€™t want to hurt anyone else, especially Billie, if the girl just stayed out of the way. Leaphorn tried to negotiate, but she hung up.

Later, Leaphorn returned home to find that someone had been inside his house. A photo of him and his wife, Emma, was moved. His mail was disturbed . He realized with horror that Irene had been in his personal space, learning about his life. The assassin wasn’t just hunting for Leroy anymore; she was now obsessively focused on him.

Billie Makes a Run for It

With both her grandfather and Albert dead, the police decided the only safe place for Billie was to send her back to St. Catherineโ€™s, the boarding school she ran away from. Manuelito, who attended that same school, knew it was a terrible place. But she had no other solution to offer .

Billie overheard the plan and panicked. She tried to run from the station, but Manuelito caught her. Manuelito took Billie to her own trailer for the night, promising to protect her and figure things out . She shared stories of running away from St. Catherineโ€™s herself when she was young, bonding with the girl.

But Billie had her own plan. That night, after learning from Manuelito that Leroy had likely gone back to Los Angeles, she snuck out of the trailer and caught a bus to LA to find him . By morning, she was gone, putting herself directly in harmโ€™s way.

The Final Showdown: The Assassin Kisses Leaphorn

The episode ended with the most shocking scene of the season so far. Leaphorn went to Hunt Mesa for a sweat ceremony alone. When he finished, he found Irene waiting for him. She held him at gunpoint .

Instead of pulling the trigger, she spoke to him. She told him she admired him, that she had read about Navajo culture, and that she respected men who build things with their hands. She called him a survivor . She once again begged him to leave the case alone, saying she didnโ€™t want to hurt him because she cared about him.

Then, in a move that left Leaphorn stunned, she leaned in and kissed him . It was not a romantic kiss, but the act of someone who is completely obsessed and mentally unstable. She told him they were two opposing forces in a spiritual union and that she hoped they would see each other again . She then slipped away into the darkness, leaving Joe standing there, trying to process what just happened.

A quick teaser at the end confirmed that the next episode will see Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito heading to Los Angeles. With Billie on the run and the assassin possibly following her, the hunt is about to leave the reservation and enter the dangerous streets of the city.
