The internet is doing what it does best today—pausing trailers, zooming in on background details, and connecting dots that Marvel probably wanted to keep separate for a little while longer. The brand new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer dropped on March 18, and while everyone was busy talking about Tom Holland growing organic webshooters or Jon Bernthal’s Punisher showing up, eagle-eyed fans spotted something much bigger. It looks like the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer might have accidentally given away the entire ending of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and the new season hasn’t even premiered yet.

The clue is tiny. It lasts maybe two seconds. But for Marvel fans who have been following Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin) take over New York City politics, it changes everything we thought we knew about where the story is heading.

The Key to the City Scene That Has Everyone Talking

About 36 seconds into the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, there is a quick shot of Spider-Man standing on a stage in what looks like an official city ceremony. He is being handed the key to New York City. A woman in a business suit stands next to him, smiling for the photo op. MJ and Ned are watching the whole thing on television back home.

That woman is the problem. Or rather, who she is and what her job means is the problem.

In Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Wilson Fisk became the mayor of New York City. It was his ultimate power move—taking the criminal empire he built as Kingpin and legitimizing it through politics. By the end of Season 1, Fisk had tightened his grip on the city and banned vigilantism entirely. Matt Murdock has spent the entire build-up to Season 2 planning a resistance against him.

So if Spider-Man is getting the key to the city in Brand New Day, that honor should technically come from Mayor Fisk himself. But it doesn’t. The woman in the trailer is someone else entirely.

Who Is the Woman Handing Spider-Man the Key?

This is where the detective work comes in. Multiple sources have identified the actress in that scene as Zabryna Guevara, who plays Sheila Rivera on Daredevil: Born Again. Sheila is the chief of staff and political advisor to Mayor Wilson Fisk. She works for him. She is not the mayor herself.

Some fans initially thought the actress might be Liza Colón-Zayas, who was previously announced as joining the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast in an unknown role. But the overwhelming consensus from entertainment outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Den of Geek, and GamesRadar points to Guevara reprising her role as Fisk’s right-hand woman.

If Sheila Rivera is handing Spider-Man the key to the city and posing for the official photo, that means one thing: Wilson Fisk is no longer the mayor by the time Brand New Day takes place.

What This Means for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres on March 24, 2026 on Disney+. That is less than a week away. The show has been promoting a season all about Matt Murdock building a “resistance” against Mayor Fisk’s authoritarian crackdown on vigilantes. Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum even described Daredevil as “a revolutionary” in the upcoming season.

But if Fisk is out of office by the time Spider-Man: Brand New Day rolls around (which hits theaters July 31, 2026), then Season 2 likely ends with Fisk losing power. Whether he gets impeached, resigns, or is forced out by Daredevil’s resistance, the result is the same. The king loses his throne.

Executive producer Sana Amanat confirmed in a recent interview that the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 happen before Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and that both projects will share some characters. She did not reveal who those characters are, but this trailer just made a pretty strong case that Sheila Rivera is one of them.

Fan Reactions Are Mixed

Marvel fans never miss a detail, and this one exploded across social media within hours of the trailer dropping. Some are upset that a major spoiler for an upcoming Disney+ series was potentially revealed in a movie trailer. Others think Marvel might be playing a smarter game.

“Smart af of them to put this in the trailer and subtly hype Daredevil for next week,” one fan wrote on Twitter. The timing is certainly interesting. Dropping a trailer with a Daredevil: Born Again connection just days before the Season 2 premiere could be a calculated move to remind people the show exists.

On Reddit, fans are debating other possibilities. Some think the scene could be a flashback to before Fisk became mayor. “Thing is though, we never saw or heard who was Mayor before Fisk, so this could be before born again,” one Reddit user pointed out. But that theory falls apart when you consider the timeline. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is confirmed to take place after the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, not before.

Others have suggested that Sheila Rivera might simply be standing in for Fisk at the ceremony. But giving out the key to the city is a ceremonial duty that usually requires the mayor’s personal presence. Having an assistant do it would be unusual, especially for someone with Fisk’s ego.

The Bigger MCU Street-Level Connection

This isn’t just about one spoiler. It confirms something Marvel fans have been hoping for since Daredevil showed up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The street-level heroes of New York are finally operating in the same sandbox.

Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum explained back in October 2025 that the teams behind Daredevil: Born Again and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are communicating closely to make sure everything lines up. “We are communicating a lot with the team on Spider-Man: Brand New Day to make sure that there’s coherence there,” Winderbaum told Entertainment Weekly. “We don’t want to spoil anything, but it very much exists in the same world and it is important.”

The Punisher is already confirmed to appear in both projects. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle shows up in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer driving his signature battle van. Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones is also expected to join Daredevil’s resistance in Born Again Season 2. These characters are building toward something bigger, and the Mayor Fisk storyline is the thread tying them all together.

What Happens to Fisk Next

If Fisk loses the mayor’s office by the end of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, that does not mean Vincent D’Onofrio is done playing the character. It actually opens up more interesting possibilities. A Fisk without political power is a Fisk who has to go back to his old ways. The criminal underworld of New York just became his only option again.

There is also the lingering question of how Fisk feels about Spider-Man. In the comics, Wilson Fisk first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #50 back in 1967. He has always been a Spider-Man villain as much as a Daredevil one. Seeing these two characters finally share screen time in the MCU feels inevitable. Maybe Brand New Day sets that up without Fisk even appearing.

For now, Marvel and Sony are staying quiet. But fans only have to wait until March 24 to find out if the theory is correct. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres in less than a week, and if the trailer is accurate, we are about to watch Wilson Fisk’s political career crash and burn.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026. By then, we will know exactly how much of the movie’s ending was hiding in plain sight all along.
