Netflix has officially given the green light to Enigma Variations, a new limited series based on the bestselling novel by André Aciman, the author behind the Oscar-winning film Call Me By Your Name. The streaming service also confirmed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will now play the lead role of Paul, replacing Jeremy Allen White, who was originally attached to the project.

The series, which comes from studio Media Res (The Morning Show, Pachinko), has been in development since early 2025. While White was initially set to star and executive produce, the The Bear actor left the production near the end of 2025. Netflix quickly began searching for a replacement, and Taylor-Johnson entered negotiations shortly after.

What ‘Enigma Variations’ Is About

The story follows Paul, a man whose life is shaped by the different people he loves over ten years. The official logline describes the show as “an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love.” It asks a central question: “In a world of endless choices, will we know when we’ve found the one?”

In the novel, Paul has relationships with both men and women. His journey starts with a childhood crush on his parents’ cabinetmaker in southern Italy. It moves through his years at a New England college where he meets a woman he keeps running into over the years, and includes anonymous meetings with men in New York City. The show is expected to explore these same themes of sexual fluidity and the complexity of lasting attachments.

Who Is Making the Show

A.K. Shuman, who worked on The Wheel of Time, serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Oliver Hermanus, known for The History of Sound, will direct and executive produce. André Aciman, the author of the original novel, is also on board as an executive producer alongside Monica Levinson.

Media Res’ Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for the studio. The company has a strong track record with critically acclaimed series, including Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Pachinko.

A Big TV Debut for Aaron Taylor-Johnson

For Taylor-Johnson, this marks his American television series debut. The 35-year-old actor is best known for his work in films. His recent projects include Robert EggersNosferatu, The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling, Kraven the Hunter, and the zombie sequel 28 Years Later. He also played Pietro Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Taylor-Johnson is set to appear in several upcoming movies, including another collaboration with Eggers called Werwulf, Blood on Snow, and Cry to Heaven.

Why Jeremy Allen White Left

White, who won a Golden Globe for his role in The Bear, was first linked to Enigma Variations in January 2025. He was expected to both star and executive produce. But sources confirm he left the project at the end of 2025. No official reason has been given for his exit, though his schedule remains full. He is currently attached to Enigma, an A24 project also starring Austin Butler.

When White’s casting was first announced, fans of Aciman’s work reacted strongly. One person wrote online, “Sounds so intriguing, and I’m all for more complex love stories. Definitely adding this to my watchlist.” Another said, “This has heartbreak written all over it. Jeremy Allen White in a love story that spans years and identities? I’m already bracing myself for the feels.”

The Call Me By Your Name Connection

This is the second time Aciman’s work has been adapted for the screen. Call Me By Your Name, which starred Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, received four Academy Award nominations. James Ivory won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. That film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of first love and longing.

Enigma Variations is often described by readers as a companion piece to Call Me By Your Name, dealing with similar themes of desire and memory but over a longer stretch of time. Aciman has spoken in the past about wanting his characters’ sexuality to exist without labels. In an interview, he said, “I didn’t want the love between the two men to exist, and I didn’t want them to be closed-minded to anything… I also think that one of the reasons why people are so moved is because their father never gave them that speech.”

Where and When to Watch

Enigma Variations will stream exclusively on Netflix once production wraps. The series has officially been ordered, though no filming start date or release window has been announced yet. For viewers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and India, the show will be available on Netflix’s global platform.
