Marvel Studios is building a clearer path between the street-level crime drama and the larger superhero world. With Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 arriving on Disney+ in just days, the creative team has now confirmed a direct link to the New Avengers side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a new character.
The connection involves Matthew Lillard’s mysterious character, Mr. Charles. Showrunner Dario Scardapane recently revealed that this figure was deliberately written to operate within the world of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the government operative introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow who is assembling her own team of heroes and anti-heroes. This link ties the series directly to the upcoming Thunderbolts film and the broader New Avengers narrative.
Mr. Charles Is Connected to Val’s Network, Showrunner Confirms
The confirmation came during a recent interview where Scardapane explained the thinking behind Mr. Charles. He stated that the character was built specifically to exist within the sphere of influence controlled by Valentina, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
“So, building Mr. Charles as somebody who lives in the Val world, we wanted to make that connection. So, that’s why that’s on the other end of the phone call.”
Scardapane also shared his personal interest in expanding that connection further. He noted that while he would love to include Valentina more directly in the show’s world, those major crossover decisions come from higher up within Marvel Studios.
“For me, personally, away from everything MCU, I would love her to be part of our world. There’s a story in the back of my head I would love to tell you, but I don’t know… Those choices aren’t mine.”
Executive producer Sana Amanat also spoke about the importance of building these links. She said it is always valuable to have that connective tissue because future storytelling possibilities remain open.
“Yeah, it’s always nice to have that connective tissue, because you never know. So yes, as fans, we would love it.”
What This Means for the Larger MCU Storyline
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has been positioned as a key player in the MCU’s government and intelligence side. She currently leads the CIA and has been recruiting characters like John Walker (U.S. Agent) and Yelena Belova. Her role in Thunderbolts and the developing New Avengers story makes her one of the most important non-superpowered figures in the franchise.
By placing Mr. Charles within her network, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 establishes that Valentina’s operations extend into New York City’s political and criminal underworld. This directly connects the show to the events expected in Thunderbolts and beyond. With Mayor Wilson Fisk already consolidating power in the city, the addition of Valentina’s influence creates a layered conflict involving both street-level crime and national government interests.
The confirmation also puts to rest earlier speculation about Mr. Charles’ role in the series. Rather than being a standalone villain or associate of Fisk, the character now carries larger implications for how Daredevil fits into the MCU’s next phase.
Born Again Season 2 Premiere Details and Release Information
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on March 24, 2026, exclusively on Disney+. For viewers in India, the series will be available on JioHotstar on the same day.
The season picks up six months after the events of Season 1, with Wilson Fisk having declared martial law and taken firm control of New York City. Showrunner Dario Scardapane described the new season’s starting point in an interview with SFX Magazine.
“Fisk has won, the city is gradually being put under his boot and we pick up all of our major players around six months later. The Fisk administration at this point has really taken hold. At the same time, there’s a bubbling up of an underground.”
He added that New York itself is being transformed during this period, with characters changing due to the political shifts happening around them.
The season consists of eight episodes and continues production, with filming that began in February 2025 expected to wrap up in July 2025. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, alongside Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson.

Her appearance marks the first time the character has appeared since the Netflix series ended in 2019.
Ritter’s Jessica Jones joins the growing list of Defenders-era characters now officially integrated into the main MCU timeline. Her return also fuels speculation about other Netflix-era characters potentially appearing in future projects.
The season also brings back Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, and Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn. Jon Bernthal will not appear as Frank Castle in this season, though he is set to return as the Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and a separate television special.
