After a two-year wait, fans of the Australian teen drama finally know when they can say goodbye to Hartley High. Netflix has set the release date for the third and final season of Heartbreak High, and the latest trailer brings back a fan-favorite character many thought was gone for good.
The series, which is a modern take on the beloved 1990s Australian show, will premiere its last batch of episodes on March 25, 2026. The announcement came during Netflix’s “What’s Next” event for Australia and New Zealand, where the streamer showcased its upcoming slate of local productions.
The Final Term at Hartley High Begins
The upcoming season picks up with the students preparing for graduation. But leaving high school behind is never simple, especially at Hartley High. According to the official synopsis, a “revenge prank goes horribly wrong,” forcing Amerie and her friends to cover up their secret or risk losing everything just as they are about to start their adult lives.
Filming for the final chapter began in November 2024 and wrapped in February 2025. The show’s return comes more than a year after production ended, making the wait particularly long for viewers who have followed the chaotic lives of the Hartley High students since the series rebooted in 2022.
Malakai’s Return Confirmed in New Trailer
One of the biggest questions leading up to season three has been whether Thomas Weatherall would return as Malakai Mitchell. Season two ended with Malakai leaving Australia for Switzerland, seemingly saying goodbye to Amerie and his life at Hartley High. He left a letter for Amerie confessing his feelings, but it was destroyed in a fire before she could read it.
Weatherall had posted what many fans thought was a goodbye message on Instagram after the second season, writing: “Thank you to everyone who watches, thank you to this cast, thank you to my dearest mates, and most importantly thank you to the greatest creator and writer Hannah Carroll Chapman. Feeling very lucky and overwhelmed.”
However, the official trailer for season three, released on February 16, 2026, shows Malakai back at Hartley High. The two-minute preview confirms that the character’s story is not over, and viewers will see what happens when he reunites with Amerie and the rest of the group during their final term.

What to Expect from the Final Episodes
The show’s creator and writers have described the final season as an emotional conclusion to the series. Actor Will McDonald, who plays Ca$h, previously told Pedestrian.TV that season three would be the “craziest” of the three seasons and promised it would be “an emotional roller coaster.”
The story picks up with the characters facing the realities of life after high school. The graduation setting adds extra weight to their decisions and mistakes, as the consequences could affect their futures beyond Hartley High.
The series has earned critical praise since its debut, including an International Emmy Award. The reboot introduced a new generation to the Hartley High universe while tackling modern issues with the same raw honesty that made the original series popular in the 1990s.
